Just thought I'd introduce myself...

Hello, everyone. To start, I'm a 100% straight female in her late 20's, and I've been interested in eunuch.org ever since I came across the link on wikipedia.org about 2 yrs ago. Overall, I find myself fascinated over the various reasons people, especially men, want to modify themselves, academically interested over doctors needing to modify others, especially men, due to disease, like cancer, and appalled over people modifying others against their will. As for modifying people against their will, there can be a few exceptions, like child abusers, and the like.

However, I'm strongly for consent.

Let's see...Considering the topic of sexuality, sexuality is far too complicated to be limited to physical aspects such as genitals and hormones. That's why someone can't just physically turn someone into the opposite sex and expect that person to be that sex.

Well, anyway, that pretty much covers the main information I wanted to share.

Take care, everyone!

Welcome to the zoo. The topic is interesting... I don't think Doctors "need" to modify others? Heck I had a medical reason and had to push to get it done.

Or was that a typo?
With all due respect I think the issue of people changing sex is not what you think. I remember that old black book "Everything you wanted to know about sex but were afraid to ask" saying that male to female transexuals were nothing but castraited men hacked up by surgeons to "look" like women. Or words to that effect... I think that this is a harsh value judgment on things that people who have never had any issues like this can't easily understand. If you were to simply shoot up Testosterone weekly I think you would quickly understand (for example) what a huge factor hormones have in wiring us Male or Female. I wish I had the pod cast of the F2M transexual talking about the effects of the first couple months of HRT. Amazing stuff...
From the folks that I know who have gone the other way shutting down Testosterone and substituting Female Hormones has just as stong an effect. And while a surgicaly created Vagina is not the exact same thing if no one other then a doctor can tell the difference? Is there a difference?

mrt: You make some very excellent points, especially concerning hormones.

As for the whole male to female sex change, I was mainly thinking about the true story of David Reimer. As David's story goes, David and his identical twin brother, both born male, were both recommended for circumcision when they were still infants. A certain "bad" method was used that resulted in David's penis, basically, being destroyed.

Doctors thought it best and managed to talk David's parents to change him to female and raise him that way without him or his twin brother ever knowing he was originally male. However, David never identified as or felt female. And, even though it's science fiction, I still think it's interesting to note that in the TV movie Mr.Stitch the character named Lazarus that was created without any sexual organs identified as and felt male.

The important thing is what you identify as inside. If you've got a male body but feel like you're female (or vice versa) then gender reassignment can help. But yes, you can't chop off a guys genitals and then turn them into a woman and expect them to identify as female.
David Reimer was born a boy and identified as a boy, so bringing him up as a girl didn't work as he wasn't one. This was done at the time there were theories that the idea of gender was a social construct, so if you raised someone as a girl (irrespective of their actual biological sex) then they would identify as a girl. This turned out to be wrong.

joanne-f: Awesome points on gender identity!

And, I consider myself to be extremely fortunate that I was actually born as the gender I identity myself with.

You did an excellent job explaining it. For those that don't get it I suggested in the past that they imagine waking up in a different sexed body and being yelled at to start acting like a proper _________ and have sex with _________ as is intended.
Of course whats inside is what counts. The external parts are just parts. And as the child who was changed found out. They don't make the person.
