Screen Brightness

Post by Kortpeel (imported) »

My current (and previous) screen has run out of brightness.

The current screen (CRT type) is set at max brightness and contrast but is steadily getting dimmer by the month. It is okay for word processing and spreadsheets but is no longer any good for viewing pictures on the net. When the screen was new, brightness and contrast were fine at mid point of the control range.

Is it possible to do anything about it, short of getting a new screen? I suspect there may be a preset inside the box that needs tweaking. But does anyone here actually know?

Any info would be welcome - and possibly even helpful.

Regards

May not be the same on all monitors but years ago when I was in IT we use to on occasion pop the case off and there where several trimmer pots one which would crank up the brightness some. Know how ever that once that this is done the monitor will completely burn out quicker than normal as you are adjusting higher than is meant to be. Also be cautious about adjusting the pot especially if you have power to the monitor and even if you don’t have power to it. It seems there might be a component inside the cover that might hold a lethal charge.

The one thing I can suggest is to try the monitor in question on a different computer to see if it does the same thing. If it is still dim then time for a new one. If the monitor is fine then something is wrong with your computer. That would be the best step in troubleshooting the problem.

However based on what you have indicated the CRT sounds like it is on the old side, and it might be time to get a new LCD screen.

Go into your video card settings and see if there is a slider to control bright/contrast, other than the buttons on the monitor itself. I have a machine at work like that; the screen got dimmer, and I went into the video properties of the card and was able to turn it up. It came set at 50% from the factory.
