AOL Members and Email.

Ok folks, I'm starting to get a mite tired of seeing SCOMP (spam) reports by AOL members.

The EA does not, has not, and will not send anything classifiable as spam to any user on this board. If you wish not to receive emails from other members, notifications of private messages, and the like then change your settings in the "User CP" section. Simply click on "User CP" at the top of the page, then click on "Edit Options" in the bar on the left. From there you can turn off any and all emails to you from the EA, other users, or whatever.

Next time I receive a SCOMP message that someone has reported, something will be done. The way I see it, there are three options.

1) Find the user who reported it, and delete their account.

2) Disable all outgoing email to ANY AOL account, for any reason.

3) Ban AOL email accounts entirely.

Again, to any AOL user, if you do not wish to receive emails from the EA, simply go in and TURN THEM OFF. At no point will those settings be overridden, and regardless of what settings you use, no spam will ever be sent to you.

Well here's the deal more then likely a member here got a piece of spyware that read the address book and is using addresses from that to spam accounts all over the web. Thr reporter of the sapm may not even be a member here.

It does not necesseraily mean that the spam is coming from EA the address is being spoofed. AOL is very proactive and encourages members to report spam. Another thing AOL members can tag phrases etc. and reroute them to a junk address thing is not to many do that.

I use AOL for one reason they have the best spam filter out there that is if you are smart enough to turn it on this filter does not generate reports by the way it just routes spam to a junk box.

Bottom line get a an anti spyware program and run it often SpyBotS&D is good it will immunize you against thousands of these spybots and if FREE, Pest Patrol is a good pay one, AVG is okay and free, MacCaffee has one built in but is so so, Put your firewall up to to help prevent these bots from stealing your addresses and useing them to spoof.

I will add that I did receive a copy of the contents of said email, with the AOL user's email address redacted out. It was most definitely a private message sent by one member here, to another. Whomever it was addressed to is absolutely a member of this message board, and one who has said yes to the option to allow messages to be emailed to them.

I have never received a SCOMP message from AOL that was regarding an actual spam email, or the result of an email address harvested from either the message boards or another person's address book.

To date, they have all been about birthday greetings, notifications of private messages, subscriptions to threads on the boards, the confirmation email from both the bulletin board here and the personals section, and the like.

I'd be willing to admit that the registration confirmations may have been sent as a result of pranks, had not the users in question first used them to activate their accounts on this site.

Ah that clears up things a bit. I made an assumption based on the your first post.
