Chat problems!!

I am having an IMPOSSIBLE time trying to get onto chat. I have downloaded JAVA. I have made sure that it's not being blocked. I've closed every other program imaginable. Yet, when I click on it and put in my screen name it says:
[14:32] Connecting...
[14:32] Logging in...
and does nothing else.
If, wheter it be a minute later or 15 minutes later I type anything it ends up saying:
[14:33] Not on a channel
I click on the channel button and nothing happens.
It's like it doesn't exist. It won't connect or log in and I can't figure out what is wrong! 
Does anyone have a clue what I'm either doing or not doing that's making everything not happen right? Thanks in advance for any and all help that you can give. (Be forewarned: I may be 21 but my computer knowledge is not grand.)
