It works very poorly with regular soda, and phenomenally well with diet. The artificial sweetener is one of the key components in the explosion.

Someone at a class today saw me grab a diet coke and told me she'd read how unsafe it was. I wonder if she thought I'd explode on drinking it. Perhaps that's why she made a hasty retreat!

Rumors abound about diet sodas and sweeteners. Most of them are false.

Some folks do react to NutraSweet or other types, though, just as some are allergic to nuts or shellfish.
