I see that the personals system is up and that there are several people signed in already. So... I decided to add myself and much to my horror discovered that someone is using the identity that I've spent YEARS building here. At least it seems that way since it tells me another user is using that name. Or put another way, it won't let me sign-up using the name I'm using on this post.

Is this some sort of glitch, or is the system not somehow set up to cross-check if a user name being applied for in the personals is also being used on the archive message boards?

I think it's kind of horrible that I cannot use my archive name in the personals. It almost feels like I'm being violated. I build an identity and then someone else can suddenly use it instead of me. *ugh* I feel as if the automated response is telling me, "Hey, you built this identity for 10 years, but the system is letting someone else use it now. Too bad!"

I really appreciate all the effort that you've put into the system and just would REALLY like to be able to use my archive name on it and not let someone else "steal" my archive identity.

Anyone that is working on this have thoughts? Possible solutions?

I also felt somewhat violated when I logged into chat one night about a month ago and found someone else was logged in as Todd. Of course, there are other Todd's out there and there's no reason they, or even someone named Harry, couldn't log in using Todd. It would be nice, although perhaps not doable, if the Archive required folks to create a screen name for chat that is new and not the name of a member.

Todd is not a unique screen name like yours. Still, I've spent considerable time posting on the boards and my blog, building an identity as you have. I was really concerned that this other Todd would sully my reputation.

I, too, really appreciate the hard work of the volunteers who keep this site running and add new features, besides.

I've actually been somewhat awaiting this thread for a few days now, ever since the new Personals section went 'live' as an easter egg. (For the record books that was Jan 30.) Expect the 'official' launch to happen fairly soon.

Ok, easiest one first.

Todd, there is a way in the chatroom to register a nickname so that you, and only you, can use it. If I'm in there the next time you log in, ask me and I can walk you through the process. Failing that, at least some of the ops know the process and can help you with it. Aside from that, unfortunately it is not in the nature of IRC to 'play nice' with message boards and the like. IRC is one of those protocols that predates the whole World Wide Web.

Losethem. This one's a bit harder. The new personals section does have a potential for at least some integration with vBulletin, that that's something I'm still experimenting with. I'm not 100% sure on how stable that portion is, or exactly what checks it does before allowing registration to the personals. I have been told that it won't allow for all those registered with the message board to automatically have accounts with the personals software, but am not sure yet if it would disallow conflicting usernames. It is something I am aware of, and will be working on. If you, or anyone else who is a member of the boards, finds this happening, please let me know and I will do my best to resolve the situation. In the meantime, I will keep experimenting with the integration software to see if I can prevent this from happening in the future.

Finally, yes the system is 100% live, as stable as I can get it, and provided it doesn't bring the server down it will remain up and open from here on.

The next step is to figure out enough PHP to achieve some of the other long-term plans I've had for various bits and pieces of the website.

I am having the same problem. I am using the username and password that I log into EA with.

I just signed up with the new personals and I wasn't able to use my Sign name from here, so I just created a new one for the personals when it asked me to register. I'm not sure if when I was signing up for the personals if I could have just entered my existing sign in name, I didn't try, but it's ok, I'm in and I really like the way the personals look. Nice format, pretty neat. Thanks for getting them back for us.

I also can't sign up for the personals, ive tried different user names and email addresses but i keep on getting this message:

"Somebody has recently registered with your IP address. Please try again in 24 hours"

what can i do?

Guess one simple way to protect your name on the personals is to sign up on it as soon as possible and lock it in.

A Word of Warning. I do not think it would be wise to try to steal nicks of others. Would think management would look down on that as being rude. Management does have the finale say and could put your membership in question or in suspension.

Please respect the rights of others. Many have been here over a decade and have used the same nick and is well known.

Many thanks for all the work that must have gone into the Personals. I hope things like the nickname business is worked out soon, and shame shame shame on any nick-stealers.

I do think we should not allow completely empty listings; some have no picture and no information at all. What is the point in that? :-\

I have just tried signing up again but this time using a completly different nick, password and email address, but i still seem to be getting that error message saying that someone else recently sighned in using that ip address

why dose it work for some and not for others? what am i doing wrong?

You are one of the two Todd's I know here. For a long while when I saw your posts I had thought they belonged to incuser.

I think my id 'supernumerycloaca' is safe. There's not too many people who want to identify themselves as extra chicken holes.
