No 8 F. Never.

I did notice when a rain front is approaching after nerve heightening Santa Ana winds,

I get more somnolent then usual. With less help.

My wife was similarly effected by the weather.

When we visited Eureka where there is different weather in ten minutes of ten miles,

we never felt the variances of mood from the weather. I liked it. Too wet for her.

Sleepy weather so nice when it happens and one can exploit it.

New year was fun here. +1°C at the day of New Year. +3°C with rain now.

I want rubber boots or, even better, some amphibious vehicle. Too much water, ice and salt here.

It changes in cycles, two winters two years and 3 years ago (if I remember correctly) were really cold. This one is a bit strange, but we still have January and February to prove that this winter can be cold .

As for the WWII stories - General Frost combined with Colonel Rasputitza (season of bad roads) can be brutal...

Well, around the first or second week after Thanksgiving, I get these overwhelming urges to find a nice snug cave, get fat, and set the alarm for half past April, (though, knowing me, I will probably hit the snooze alarm till May Day.)

Those big, bad rain storms continue to dissolve at the L.A. / O.C. line.

Now we are in for some wind and cold. Relative cold.

A major California highway, "the Grapevine" is closed due to snow.

This is such an important road for California I am surprised they don't keep "over kill" snow plows around for the day or two they are needed.

I was always impressed how fast Milwaukee had the streets snow plowed. I know it's possible.

And the Grapevine is not too long. Just up the mountain and down the other side.

Moi, do you know why they call it the grapevine? Just a little shot over the mountain is a relative term, its still a hard drive on both cars and trucks going over that pass even in good weather. There are other routes north and places that you can cut across and catch 5 or 99 from 101 or go to Lancaster on 58 then north and back to Bakersfield.

The last thing you want is snow plows on that road trying to get rid of snow, not to mention the ice.

The NEW Grapevine barely deserves to be named for the late, great Grapevine

and its' many emergency 18 wheeler truck turn offs in case they lost their brakes, and often did.

Remember, the ole Grapevine?

Now it is a deluxe freeway with much lesser gradients.

And gets closed over an inch or three of snow.

Yes I do remember the old grapevine, it took 8 to 10 hours to go from SFV to Bakersfield now it takes an hour, however there are still turnouts for the trucks to head up ramp with sand to stop them, its still a very steep and dangerous road for truckers, coming out of Bakersfield there are 6 lanes 4 for cars and 2 for trucks, those guys loaded only do about 10 to 12 miles an hour. There are turn outs so cars can get water, at some points the north bound road is a couple miles away from the south bound road and they flipped sides, the right side of the road is on the left of the left side of the road, this is very steep road even in good weather, with snow and Ice on the road? it is rightly closed.
