This goes back to Constantine and the council of Nicea. This is the first time somebody used Jesus to leverage political power, much like some Muslims are doing in the Middle East today with Mohammad pbuh. You know, 72 virgins and paradise verses Hell, the devil with the blue eyes, demons and so forth.
