Day 5, and I am STILL without power in Cleveland, OH. I'm starting to get really pissed off over here. My poor kitties are shivering and sneezing because it's so cold in our house, and I don't have the money to buy a generator, so there's not a darned thing I can do about it. I really don't understand why it's taking so long to get the power back on in a location that was almost 500 miles from where the storm made landfall. This is just getting ridiculous.

I spent a couple of hours between planes in the Cleveland airport last Friday afternoon. I talked with several locals and none of them mentioned any power problems. How far out do you live? Is the damage widespread or just local?

I was flying between Montreal (which hit 70°F because of Sandy, but with little wind or rain) and home, which is an hour north of San Francisco and where it is supposed to hit 80°F on Monday without a cloud in sight. Grape harvest – a VERY good one – is just about complete....

In the winter of 94 I lived in the Santa Cruz Mt's, we had over 90" of rain that winter and it was about April the ground was soaked when a redwood on top of the mountain about a mile up the road decided to come down the mountain, it missed my friends house by about 50 ft, when it hit the road it made a crater then flipped and took the main line power out the guard rail and the one road that connected the upper towns with the lower ones.

We were without power for 4 days, it took them two weeks to get the tree off the road and out of there and a month to fix the road. This was just one line, did you think by magic it would all be fixed in a day or two? As I understand it millions are without power, I would not be surprised if you did not get power back for 2 weeks.

Two reasons, the power grid is old and the sure volume area effected.

I feel for you, I truly do and I wish I could help but the reality of it is that its going to take time, if you did not live so far away I would say pack up yourself and cats and head this way.

A-1 probably remembers the storm we had in 2003, or was it 2002? The power was out in this area for a week. And we're talking one town not nearly size of Indianapolis, IN and another much smaller one. And this storm was nowhere near the level of Sandy. Yeah, it's gonna take time. And man, what a week that was!

I finally just got power back. That was by far the longest power outage I have ever experienced in my life, even longer than after hurricane Ike and the tornado we had when I was 7. I pray to God that I never have to go through this ever again.

Warm kitties are definitely happier than cool cats. My pussy cat spent most of the day stretched out on my office floor, only moving to follow the sun. He's now outside looking for little micies to kill and eat (or to bring inside to drop in front of my screaming wife)....

Update:

I finally just got power back. That was by far the longest power outage I have ever experienced in my life, even longer than after hurricane Ike and the tornado we had when I was 7. I pray to God that I never have to go through this ever again.

The big 24 inch snowfall we had two or three years ago and my power was out for 5 days, the neighbor's was 7 days.

I spent less than one day before going to a relative's house for the duration and the neighbor had a generator with his two sons feeding it gasoline.

If you own a home and have natural gas service

I cannot emphasize the peace of mind my Natural Gas powered generator gives me.

I cannot ever remember the natural gas going out, ever.

I am sure there are generators that can work off Heating Oil or Propane too.

Natural Gas is handy because it just keeps getting piped in.

And you don't have to clean out old Natural Gas scum.

Don't forget, refineries and distributors rely on electricity to pump that Natural Gas to you. So, you might not be as secure as you believe.
