Of yogurt....whenever my wife and I have to go on an antibiotic of any sort, the doctor reminds us to eat a serving of yogurt every day we are on the antibiotic.This helps keep you healthy.

I'm with Transward - it's better to eat good things in moderation than bad things in quantity. Why eat a substitute? That's what led me to stop drinking soda. I used to drink diet soda, thinking it would help control my weight and my diabetes. Then one day I realized diet soda tastes terrible, has no nutritional value, and uses aspartame in stead of sugar, and aspartame comes with a long list of health threats. So why drink it? These days, I drink only water or tea. If I'm thirsty, water gives more pleasure than a Diet Coke.

Talking about drinks reminds me of another interesting dessert - Turkish coffee. Throughout the Middle East, people drink a very different sort of coffee than we're used to in the US. This coffee is very thick in texture, full of finely ground coffee. The bottom of the cup is usually coated with sediment. It's mild in flavor and always served very sweet, a sort of liquid coffee candy in small demitasse-style cups. People at cafes linger over cups of this sweetened coffee for hours. A wonderful treat at the end of a long meal. Don't forget to wear a fez while drinking.

My doctor once told me to eat yogurt and I told him it tastes like Kaopectate his nurse agreed with me.

Unless of course the antibiotic belongs to the tetracycline group, in which case the calcium in the yogurt (or any other dairy product for that matter) will chelate the antibiotic and take it out of your system and provide no medical benefits.

More folk lore then fact.

Because Calcium theoretically interferes with absorption of Tetracycline type antibiotics, then it must be true that

taking your tetracycline with milk or yogurt in the real world setting nullifies tetracycline effect 100%.

<Major Sigh !>

No clinical study exists demonstrating that dairy with tetracycline led to a loss of effect.

You might try my favorite. Seltzer (or club soda) with a squeeze of lemon or lime and if you want a tablespoon of simple sugar syrup, (about 30 calories, .. I skip the sugar) Or mix the seltzer about 3/1 with a not too sweet fruit juice or a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar. I discovered that it was the fizz that I really liked. Now pop tastes ridiculously sweet. If you like this I highly recommend the SodaStream home soda maker (about $65-200) Much cheaper in the long run and you don't have to haul all those bottles filled w/ heavy liquid around.

Seltzer goes without saying. I'm an old-time New York Jew. That means I grew up drinking soda from squirt bottles. Good to drink, and useful if you're one of the Three Stooges.

Another old-time Jewish treat is not strictly a dessert, but still sweet - tzimmes. This is a stew made with carrots and prunes or raisins, usually with meat or fowl. Honey may be added for extra sweetness, but the traditional way is to cook for a very long time until the natural sweetness of the fruit and carrots becomes pronounced. When I was a kid, my parents often took me to the French-Romanian Restaurant, a now vanished icon of the Lower East Side where you could get many old-world delicacies. They served tzimmes made with chicken, prunes, and carrots. Wonderful. Of course squirt bottles of seltzer were available.

There is nothing like seltzer for those mornings when you wake up to discover that a tarantula has taken up residence in you mouth, just before you realize it's your own tongue.
