I think that has happened to all of us at one time or another, if you live where it gets snow and ice you are going to fall on your ass.

Update -- 04:45pm EST 10/26/2012

Here is the Alerts Broadcaster Update I just sent out to our corporate clients. In the name of public safety and erring on the side of caution I wanted to share this with the general public:

The stage is set for an historic storm over the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England early next week, an unfortunate convergence of meteorological (and astronomical) events, leading to the formation of a huge storm capable of widespread damage, from winds, waves and inland flooding. I am not an economist, but based on where the highest impacts are predicted, I see no reason why this won't be a billion dollar storm, capable of extended power outages, beach erosion and coastal flooding that may take weeks to repair and restore.

* Maps below include "SLOSH" predictions for a Category 1-2 hurricane for New York City, courtesy of the New York City Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (2009).

What makes Hurricane Sandy different?

1). Size of the storm. Sandy will be nearly 500 miles wide within 48 hours, with a 300 mile radius of tropical storm force winds, and a 100-200 mile radius of hurricane-force wind gusts Sunday night into Tuesday.

2). Duration of the storm. Unlike Irene, which moved quickly ashore late August, 2011, Sandy, a hybrid hurricane/Nor'easter, will move slowly, "hooking" westward, prolonging the amount of time sustained, high winds can carve out a significant storm surge, and extending the period of time when flooding rains will fall well inland.

3). Astronomical Bad Luck. A full moon is coming Monday afternoon, about the time Sandy will be pushing toward coastal Delaware or New Jersey, increasing tides, making the resulting storm surge even more severe.

It's not just a "Frankenstorm, it could very well be the storm of the century. In 3-4 days, an extremely rare collision of weather events similar to the "Perfect Storm" of fall 1991 will be setting up. Hurricane Sandy will be coming up the East coast at the exact same time as a gigantic frontal system will be dipping down from Canada, the polar jet stream will be running into the southern jet stream and seeding it with atmospheric energy, and a winter-weather system will be coming in from the west. All of these elements will collide just off the east coast and seed each-other, potentially resulting in an unimaginably huge super-storm with air pressure potentially as low as a category-4 hurricane according to forecast models. This super-storm will then proceed to hook around to the west and make landfall directly on the US Northeast. If this pans out the way the forecast models are predicting, it would be a multi-billion-dollar disaster with hurricane-force winds and storm surge along the entire Northeast coast from New York to Maine. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

For comparison, the "Perfect Storm" of Halloween 1991 had an air pressure of about 972 mb. The strongest non-tropical low on record is 955 mb. Current forecast models on this storm are predicting doom-like scenarios with pressures as low as 930 mb, the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane.

Here are some forecast models from yesterday which are showing what might happen here:

-Video representation of forecast, shows the descending cold front seeding the storm and then swinging it back to the west: http://www.ready.noaa.gov/data/forecast ... 1/anim.gif

-GFS Forecast Model: (New Jersey landfall at 949 mb) http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/GemPakTier/Mag ... _thick.gif

Plus in addition to the rain and the wind, there is serious potential for tremendous snowfall across the northwest Appalachians.

Hype or Real. We will soon find out.

Remember, it is the <doom> Federals <Darth Vadar breath sounds> who are supplying the data.

Bob3 Ex-BFF is closest to the expected landfall of the central Jersey coast.

Any other member near the "Bulls Eye" on the <doom> Federals <Darth Vadar breath sounds> proposed target?

Prediction: Storm induced misery will favor Romney, because any misery is bad for the incumbent.

( )0( ) this is not the thread to discuss that. Huh?

A delightful dry Santa Ana effect without the major winds has temperature around the high 70's.

My prize, over one year old avocado got harvested by some critter but, I got most of it. A very potent, nutty avocado.

A cluster of ripe Fuji apples came off the tree and I have a grateful neighbor. I baked a couple yesterday. I am over appled.

We are in the deeps of Autumn, its crisp and cold in the morning warming up to the 50's or so by mid day, another couple weeks of this and I might need to put on long pants and shoes, t-shirt even. The trees are about bare with 5 inches of leaves everywhere, I guess I should go rake them up but if I do the first wind and they will all be back. Truly one of the more worthless tasks in life. The birds are gone, have not seen one at my feeders in a few days. The squirrels are on the feeders trying to load up for the winter. The dog no longer wants to lie in the sun, she wants back in the house as soon as she has taken care of business. I like this time of year, then again as a pagan I like the changes in the seasons as each gives so much beauty.

I can't wait for it to snow.

At 50F, I have 3 blankets on the bed.

Windows closed. PC running with power supply exhaust fan pointed at me.

Dog sleeps with me.

I go outside in a stocking cap, with thermal underwear, a hoodie, hood up over the cap, gloves, and thick socks in insulated boots.

It's 43 outside right now. The dog can pee on the floor for all I care.

I only pray that the storm won't cause a power outage. We had two last year, and it was hell. Now, I need two machines to sleep - an oxygen concentrator and a compressor (humidifier) feeding a mask covering the tube in my throat. With no power, I might have to go to the hospital, so I take this very seriously.

Inquire of your health authorities of power back up units.

They might have battery packs for those units and public health

Liberal Democrat type programs to keep you powered up.

Call your health authorities and the Emergency Preparedness Center as may exists.
