I think that the fact that O.J. Simpson was a celebrity, may have had more to do with his acquittal, than did his race. People simply don't convict celebrities of murder unless the evidence is overwhelming and direct. In the Robert Blake case, there does seem to be pretty strong evidence.
In the Peterson case, it appears that the jury bought the prosecution's premeditation argument. Myself, I doubt that the killing was premeditated, unless somebody besides Scott Peterson was the real killer.
Since the corpse of Laci Peterson was headless, an interesting possiblity is, that the head might eventually be found. What would happen if it were found in a place where Peterson could never have gone after the time that his wife disappeared?
I agree with Riverwind that there is better scenery in central and northern California than there is south of the Tehachapis, but some areas like the Anza-Borrego, are worth seeing. You can't camp under a Joshua tree in northern California, as we did a few weeks ago in the Mojave.
