Saw my Urologist again this week, the new pee hole is nearly healed, and he said the catheter will finally come out next Wednesday, after six weeks in. What a pain its been.

I hope I don't have to retrain the sphincter after the bladder so it doesn't leak when the catheter is out (I think that will be more embracing than what i have been through).

Had a PET scan this week so they can identify the other nodes the cancer may have gone to, one can only hope it hadn't travelled to far, seeing we got onto the moment I found the initial lump.

I said to the urologist this week that the joke of the duck on my right thigh looking up used to be "the early bird gets the worm."

The story now is "the bastard go it!"

I always liked the other interpretation, that the early bird just shows that the worm should have stayed in bed... 😄

Even if your bladder spincter cooperate, be prepared for the other pelvic floor muscles to be confused and perhaps a bit spasmy. My urologist has sent me to pelvic floor physical therapy to as mine would take some time to relax enough to pee.

Penis is disgusting, annoying and inconvenient. I would not miss mine as long as it involved total (penis, testicles and scrotum) with proper urethra relocation.

UPDATE:

Well after 6 weeks the catheter finally came out.

It is very different, the bladder is not used to having fluid in it so having to go the bathroom frequently (a bit of a pain).

Cant hang around once you get the urge to go, or you pee your pants.

I am told the 2nd operation of getting more lymph nodes out the showed up in the PET scan should happen within the next six weeks they hope, and that should be it according to the specialist urologist.

Glad to hear the progress! From what I've heard, it may take a while, but according to folks in the SCI world that have had to have Foley's for extended periods before going back to intermittent caths is that the bladder will eventually get used to being used again, so that should get better...

I don't know if it would work for you, or be available (very few hospitals offer it) but what they did to treat my GF's melanoma (after she lost her vision because of a bad reaction to Keytruda) was a sort of immunotherapy where they injected a 'modified herpes virus' into the tumors. (which were in her armpit lymph nodes) This is supposed to get your immune system triggered to target the tumor cells. It was a pain in that we had to make a lot of visits, and they had to go through a lot of extra stuff on their end to arrange for the extra 'biohazard' processing required to prepare the injection materials, and so on. This is a big part of why only a few hospitals can do it as most don't have the required facilities and equipment.

According to her docs, this was the last thing they could try BEFORE going to surgery, which they wanted to avoid as it had a significant risk of paralyzing her arm and probably reducing it's function... They were also concerned about the surgery not being 100% effective because they said the surgeon could only get the tumors that were big enough for him to find, so he could miss any small ones.

For her it seems to have worked, so far at least, as she has now been testing "clean" for the last 18 months or so...

I have no idea if it is something they could do with your cancer, but it might be worth asking about, as it would seem like a less invasive option than surgery.
