Wow !

You guys do love your numbers just as bobover liked his. :tongueout

A methane flame puts out less CO2 so is less likely to burn your exposed hand than a wood fueled flame that puts out more CO2. Go ahead. Give your CO2 theory a test. 😄

I know if there is a glowing furnace, the air around it is gonna be hotter.

I guess we disagree.

Meanwhile, someone finally heard Moi and is doing something about it !

Somewhere in the POLITICS pages is my description of the Carbon Cycle. I refuse to write all that out again. Not only that, I refuse to look it up on google again. Kilauea is not the cause of global warming. Neither are the current crop of active volcanoes.

This is most likely - more than anyone wants to know - about Pahoa and Kilauea.

Here's a video dated September 23, 2014 about emergency road preparations by Bill Hanson with Hawaii County Civil Defense -

(Puna Geothermal Venture Plant Manager Cliff Townsend and Director of Hawaiian Affairs Mike Kaleikini discuss contingency plans at a meeting held Monday night at Kua O Ka La Charter School.)

Here's yesterday's report on the lava flow. You can see a man taking lava samples in a bucket.

Here's an article on repair of an old road:

NEWS BRIEF

The National Park Service announced it will work with the State and County of Hawaii to construct an emergency route along the former Chain of Craters Road.

The 8 mile coastal road – buried beneath rough, hardened lava – would not be open for visitor use. It would only be for emergency access for the community.

Governor Neil Abercrombie has signed a supplemental emergency proclamation to include the repair, restorations, rebuilding, or reestablishment of Chain of Craters Road.

Here's an article on HELCO (Hawaii Electric Company) - - - interesting name when the lava is flowing.
22/helco-prepares-lava-impacts-plans-uninterrupted-service/

In a media release issued on Sept. 18, HELCO says there is no immediate threat to their facilities or power lines.

HELCO’s “key objective” is to maintain uninterrupted power for Puna. Plans include protecting utility poles,

increasing the distance between poles, and re-routing power lines away from areas that could be impacted.

That's because numbers matter; a doctor will tell you that a PSA reading of 0.75 is nothing to worry about but a reading of 75 is cause for concern.

t's not my CO2 theory that needs to be tested but yours. The heat of a flame depends on the energy output not on the CO2 output; it that were the case, putting a tablespoon of baking soda in vinegar would burn your hand off. Or think of it another way, burn acetylene 4 C2H2 + 10 O2 > 8 CO2 + 4 H2O and compare that with butane 2 C4H10 + 13 H2O > 8 CO2 + 10 H2O; both reactions generate 8 moles of CO2 but trust me, an acetylene torch gets a lot hotter than a butane lighter; the heat generated is the result of the number of carbon bonds being broken not the number of CO2 molecules formed.

yes, but the hot air around the furnace occupies only a few cubic meters; walk to the next block and you can't feel the heat. The earth's atmosphere is approximately 30 TRILLION cubic KILOMETERS (each of which would be a MILLION cubic meters, that means the atmosphere, judged conservatively to extend 15 kilometers up would occupy some 30 quintillion cubic meters. Try this exercise to understand your claim, measure the temperature of your swimming pool water, pour a teaspoon of boiling water in it, stir it around and see how much the thermometer changes.

moi, I have several times said to go to "Big Island Video News" to see what is happening, everything Dave said it on that link, even your comments are on that link, and moi, there is a lot of difference between calling in the national guard or the Army and the Army corp of Engineers, one has tanks, the other Cats, one blows things up the other builds stuff.

One of the things they are going to do if the lava flow looks like it will cross the main highway is to remove the highway first. Then the lava will have an channel to flow through.

As Dave said, the Governor got federal money to reopen the road that has been closed for years because of a lava flow, it will be open to people who live in the Puna area and the government, today they were talking about issuing a card to all the people who live in this area to be used as a pass for that road.

You really need to read more.

No I don't. My feelings are as valid as anyone's.

So what I upload about Hawai'i's volcano and its' contribution to Global Warming is how I "feel" about it.

And that's as valid as any upload. So you wanna calculate the heat diffuses so it doesn't count as "Global Warming", that's how you "feel" about it. :D

Which is to say they're worth nothing at all. The feelings of people who felt that Hitler was the savior of Germany were not valid, as history demonstrated. The feelings of people who think Lincoln is the greatest president are not valid, what is valid are the facts of Lincoln's administration. Facts can be examined; feelings can only be sedated or enhanced.

I've been treating the lava flow as interesting and sort of "fun" . . . (I know, I'm weird and strange.)

It is the first time that any person who is reasonably my friend (River is that, of course) has been near enough to a lava flow to talk about it.

I don't care if Kilauea causes "global warming" or if the lava grows a dick and has an existential crisis. It's 4500 miles away.

It's a nerd-orgasm for me.

This is a slow moving natural disaster. Not even a big MF'ing deal like a tornado or a tsunami or a hurricane (Typhoon). It's not a political statement or social experiment or a one-time occurrence. Kilauea has been erupting for 34 years and the Civil Defense in Hawaii knows what to do and what to say and how to work around it.

Let it be that and nothing else.

We get daily reports on the volcano activity, most people are just going about there normal daily business. We will take action when the flow is moving again and the town of Pahoa is in its path, other then that its just giving off some bad air.

As for Global warming, if you take a gal of boiling hot water and dump it in a swimming pool and then mix it for a minute and test the water temperature you will find that there is no difference. This is what a volcano does to our global warming, it is measurable back over a hundred thousand years in the form of Ice rings taken from both Greenland and Antarctica. The amount of carbon expelled by volcano's round the world has not changed in that time. What has changed is the indurtrial revolution and the burning of fossil fuels.
