The heat broke on the 3rd here, and last night, the forecast low was 33F according to Weather Underground. At 6AM today, the app showed 31F. We'll see later today if there was frost when the sun comes back out, as if there was, leaves will begin to die quickly as they warm up again. The past week was sunny, in the mid-to upper 70's and low 80's. It was a welcome relief, as from Mid-July to now it's been extremely dry here.

I dug my potted sweet potatoes, and had one of the Japanese purples come out at 1.6 lbs (.73 kg). I had a bunch of scraps that had sprouted in the bin, and started them in smaller pots back in February. While it's no record, it's the largest one I've ever grown. Most of them came out long and slender, even in sandy potting soil mix. I still have one bell pepper in a large pot that I brought in. I have over-wintered those before in pots.

Next project is digging the bulbs such as taro, cannas, and gladiolus. I'll get the boy next door to help; kid is like a gopher with a shovel!

You have never been in any Siberian forests?

It is not 'pick your poison' it is - pick your season - mosquitoes (and all other bloodsuckers) in summer, windchill in winter.

Damn, Winnipeg is at the same latitude as Kiev. Siberia? It is much more to the north ;-).

Sometimes I wish I lived in Indiana or Siberia for a change in weather. It has been the same here everyday for ten days: daily temperatures of 80 and 45 at night. I think Paolo stole all our rain :P

Contrary to popular belief, the north and south poles aren't the coldest regions on the planet. Siberia and a few central and upper regions of Canada are colder, and it's a toss up but colder mostly going to Siberia and regions of Moscow, and this is due to their placement relative to the magnetic fields of the earth.

Once the temps approached those of Mars for 4 days.

I'm ready for those but it's only bc I buy winter gear that's made for high altitude expedition. Thank goodness for those surplus army discounts and nifty mountain climbing gear bc it was worth it to have 3000usd of the stuff stored at home. (In case of an economic emergency and no I'm not joking my boots are made for the oil rigs so they're heavy clunkers with heavy electric liners)

NB : I'm a prepper and suffer from Raynaud's which really sucks when your extremities need the warmth

I use to return to Milwaukee for a week to visit a White Winter.

So happy to get home.

Yes, south of the Winds & Firestorms,

our weather has been monotonous.

And remains so these days after your upload.

And are ten day forecast to remain so.

It's that October, DRY HEAT event.

As hot at the coast as inland.

I melt in heat so . . .

I am 2 hours south coastal where y'all

saw fires in steep canyons in Pacific Palisades.

No true wind event here although they alert us as there.

Question: Why Not Graze Goats or other grazing critters.

Think of all that "meat" going up in flames!

We now have four seasons in Northern California – Winter, Spring, Summer, Fire, and Winter again. We are now in FIRE SEASON. Just to the north of us is the Kincaide Fire, which has now burned nearly 20 square miles (50 square kilometers) and has zero containment so far. The temperature today hit a high of 96°F (36°C) and the humidity was as low as 7%. (It’s 9% now.) The wind last night, when the fire began and quickly spread, was 75 miles per hour (120 kph). We are all looking forward to winter with cold and rain.

The town of Geyserville (population 1200) has been evacuated and friends, with kids and dogs, are staying with my daughter. We may well end up with friends in our spare bedroom, as well.
