BTW, MrT, I had a vasectomy when I was 28 (yikes, that was half a lifetime ago, maybe plix is right after all) so I was definitely unable to procreate. I was certainly male though. Not quite sure what I am now but I really, really like it :-)

Well I've had this issue running in my head for so long. As a more obvious example - When one of us has an orchiectomy (and optionally SRS) and goes on Estrogen and lives as a woman? Are they a woman? The "Everything you wanted to know about Sex" author (I think it was) said "no, these are just castrated men with fake vaginas."

I disagree. I've never been on Estrogen but I've lived part of my life with little enough Testosterone and seen how going on a normal male dose changes a person into being "male" Its a lot like the whole biz of cosmetic surgery. Is a person with a nose job a person still a person with a "nose" or is it a person with a fake nose? I think if you still blow with it you got a damn nose. And if you have a sex change and do everything BUT give birth? I think your still a woman. Otherwise every woman who is in menopause better stop calling themselves women. They are nothing more then "castrated" people wearing womens cloths.

If a person wants to define themselves as a male even tho they have no balls or they have "fake" (Yes - I hate that description) balls? I think its correct. And if a person is ok with it and wants to be labeled as a Eunuch? Hell... Why not?

Labels are not "bad" except that so often people use them to limit others to what their narrow minds will accept. Wow! Mr T = profound?! Or just too much coffee.... ;)

MrT,

I absolutely agree with you on labels. When I first came out as gay at the age of 43, it seemed really important to me to refer to myself by that label. It was somehow important to consolidtating my identity as this new gay person. Now, I'm not so sure that I really needed that. Fact of the matter is for me, and I suspect this is true for many of us, labels tend limit rather than help. They can really be constricting things because by their nature they are limiting definitions. Wow, and I thought coming out as gay was a huge step :-). This transgender stuff makes that seem trivial. Underneath it all, whatever labels I use or choose to avoid, I'm a human being. I've got far more in common with my fellow humans than any differences labels might imply.

You said it far better then I!

On thought - Should transgender stuff really be that big a deal? I did more R&D and had this interesting revelation. Many of the TS folks say that after SRS they no longer want to be considered TS because they have "transitioned" and are not in that in between zone anymore. That makes perfect sense to me. I look at that YouTube Video of Dr Bowers for example and I've no question that this is a woman. Not a male and not even a TS person. I dunno - maybe I'm too easily confused! 😄
