Last night I helped a friend order a new laptop-- her very first computer of any kind. She went with a Dell, complete with genuine Windows Vista... Should arrive within a week or so. We'll see how this cookie crumbles.

Why is it that my XP, which never had problems before, has crashed about 37 times since Vista was introduced? Am I paranoid?

Do you have a comp that came with Vista or one you installed Vista on? I'm getting the impression that most people who try to upgrade a comp to Vista are the ones having all the trouble, but that is only an impression. I don't know for sure. I'm glad I didn't try switching. I kept my old hard drive as the boot drive -- it'
s a fast SATA drive -- and had no problems what-so-ever.

It's one I installed Vista on, but it was not an upgrade. More than powerful enough to run it, everything in it is Vista-certified, and I wiped the hard drive before installing Vista from scratch. Plus the sound worked great until just recently.

I should add that I'm not looking for tech support, just illustrating how Vista has a few issues still.

I'm having the same sort of problems. I thought it was just my paranoia. --FLO--

My laptop has XP and I haven't crashed yet. I have noticed some issues when surfing the 'net though. Occasionally I can't access certain sites for whatever reason. For a few days I'll get an error message on a site but then it'll go away and pick on a different site. *shrug* I dunno what to think.

No you are not paranoid. I don't know if it is MSFT policy or just some renegades but I was told by a friend of mine who knows the MSFT locals that when they find someone whose system they are suspicious of, they mess with it from outside until the poor guy calls in whereupon they can get and address and then harrass him further officially for whatever problem they may think they have with him. I encountered someof this when I had to reload W Office (yes it fell over and got some bug) and a lot of strange things happened until I called them up and had a good screaming fit whereupon the problems suddenly disappeared. Imagine that.

This is just MSFT bastardry in my view. They probably think you haven't registered it or something and are f-----ing with you. No I am not paranoid -paranoid -paran -para -whatever :D :D

When my system starting having fits (which was not long before Vista hit the shelves), I can't imagine what would have made the MS gods suspicious. My own personal conspiracy theory, is that the so-called "critical updates" for the old system might just have a few bugs in there - maybe not enough for immediate failure, but enough to make one consider buying some new equipment.

I downloaded some of their recommended update. nothing but trouble! Damn! Had to re-set my system back before the upgrades.... still f-en-heimered, but WTF

I have two alternate theories to explain Vista.

1) Microsoft is in fact the headquarters of a massive alien research project, and all versions of Windows to date have been nothing more than elaborate tests into the psychology and behaviour of the human race. Stress levels, mass psychology, just how crappy a product has to be before nobody buys it, and technology learning curves are but a few things they're curious about.

2) Bill gets off on sadism. With each version of Windows, he has you bend over just a little bit more, and then inserts a dildo that's one size larger than the previous version. 3.11, 95, 98, ME, XP, and now Vista, each just slightly longer than the last. If I were you, I'd watch out for the next (http://www.scarletroom.com/products/11.htm)version of Windows.
