I don't know the answer to that. There seems to be a sort of mental blockage in this correspondence about castrating pre-teen boys - an absolute no-no.

Just supposing:

a) the youngster was fully aware of the long term consequences of castration

b) there really was a preparation like "neutersol" that was painless, effective and quick

c) there really were schools like my creation of Southdown Hall, where the majority of boys had been neutered

then once again there might be a society where a boy could have the option of being raised as a eunuch, without any stigma on himself - or anyone else.

Having spent plenty of time around groups of boys, both into and before puberty, I have overheard several conversations on the topic. Only ONCE have I noticed any kind of facial expression, or serene response to the issue of castration from ONE boy - out of several years worth of several sports teams of all ages. (Interestingly enough, the one boy who thought it might be a good idea was 11, prepubertal, and the smallest boy on a baseball team. Only child, no dad around.) But that's another story.

Last fall, my youngest nephew (then 13) played football. Now, as far as underwear fashion, boxers are pretty much the preferred style for his peer group. No support, you know? Nice and loose.

During a game, one of the boys on the team - a tall and lanky boy already, complete with disproportionately long arms and legs - was complaining of testicle pain during a game. He said they started to feel funny when they were getting dressed before, and started to hurt worse while playing. One good hit to the balls (he wasn't wearing a cup) later, and he was out of the game. Around 3 in the morning, according to him, he was in the ER. Not an hour later, and he was in surgery having his scrotum split open to untangle his testicles, both of which had become torsioned. He lost the right one a week later, so he says, as all of the boys on the team will testify. An implant was NOT installed. Nephew claims he showed them all his stitched / repaired scrotum in the locker room. The sight of a slightly tilted and stitched up scrotum seemed to have struck a chord with the rest of the boys.

This was at the beginning of the season, and a month later, he was cleared to resume play. Of course, in a small rural town, word travels fast and it was soon public knowledge that:

1. "Jack" had one of his balls taken out.

2. "Jack" had lost both of his balls because they "got twisted up."

3. "Jack" was going to have a sex change operation.

"Jack's" misfortune was the talk of the team for quite some time, as well. Fascination was the best word I could come up with to describe the reactions of the other boys. From what Nephew and the boys I know best, his friends, told me, no one made fun of "Jack". In fact, he seems to have gotten only sympathy and no ridicule at all, once it was explained by the coach that torsion could hit ANY of them at any time for no good reason. The doctor's conclusion was that "Jack's" low-hangers did not benefit from wearing boxers, and his activity level had aggravated the condition and caused it - not the hit that took him out of the football game.

From what the boys have told me, "Jack" went through a very rough period of depression when he was recovering, and going back to school when he was cleared was a major issue for him. Obviously, he thought that the he was going to be ostracized and made fun of, but he wasn't - at least not mercilessly. None of his friends dumped him, and at least on the outside, he seems to have fully recovered from the emotional trauma of it. He is a bit paranoid, however, and wears an athletic supporter and a cup most of the time now. It would seem that he has NO intention of endangering his one remaining testicle.

During the week that he was out of school and confined to bed, I think the report from one of the mothers who has spoken to "Jack's" mother summed it up best:

"All he does is lay there and cry. He thinks he's a freak now, and he's scared that the other one will go bad."

An extremely traumatic experience, to say the least. One can only wonder how things might have turned out if he hadn't the help from his friends to deal with it, or how things might have turned out if the other boys' attitudes had been to ridicule him instead of help him.

And the last I saw of him, puberty was proceeding normally. His body was evening out, he wasn't so scrawny, and he was sounding like Peter Brady from the notorious voice-change episode.

I think a good deal of the self-worth problems many guys have go back to mothers that really don't care for men or men's genitals.

I totally agree.
