Yes, and the American Boy Scouts had to declare bankruptcy to protect operating assets from lawsuits over sex abuse cases just this week.

Church attendence going down so low in Europe is now endangering the upkeep and use of immense and ancient historically important churches there.

If it does not help people s souls, they stop going. That s what s missing. Does religion improve people s souls and lives ? That s what people want from religions. And a decent culture to live in.

We break all the rules on here. Polite conversation used to forbid any dscussions of sex, medical problems, politics, religion, or persinal finances to prevent people arguing and fighting about those divisive topics. I m glad as Roger says, enough people are " thick skinned " on here to have civil adult discussions of forbidden topics.

Well gents it appears the Coronavirus has now established itself in our great nation. So I appreciate the wisdom that’s been shared here, seems like it’s best to regularly use lots of hand sanitizer while out in public and avoid large groups of people until this thing is done.

What are your thoughts on how long this may be a thing for us? 1-2 months? Will it be done by summer?

So far, it sounds like most " experts " don t know. Some claim it will diminish naturally with warmer summer weather. But no one knows for sure.

Probably staying as healthy as you can and keeping your hands clean and not touching your face makes sense. Cruise ships and jets seem bad places to be if you want to avoid catching it.

Since it is a new virus, and since all of the quarantine and transmission prevention seems to have failed so far, the experts are not very accurrate on how this is spread or how to avoid it.

You could choose to try to become Robinson Crusoe, living alone on some deserted island along the coast. But the mosquitos would drive you crazy all summer long. And those mosquito born diseases like Zika virus and Dengue Fever might leave you worse off than Coronavirus might. And if any medicines manufactured in China start having shortages, other minor illnesses might become life threatening without the usual medicines being available to treat them.

My reading leads me to believe that Coronavirus is more than likely to become established among humans in much the same way that the more familiar Influenza virus is established. There could easily be a routine Coronavirus season with the attendant injections to match the most recent strains or mutations. There is not any indication, so far, that the Coronavirus is seasonal but optimistically it could end up that way as other virus's have done in the past. I do not think this is a "one and done" situation. --FLO--

Rog, careful! Especially in large groups of people. I "accidentally" refilled your hand sanitizer with lube. Yeah, so there's that and I know what you do when you need to wipe off excess lube from your hands.

https://www.cdc.gov/about/history/sars/timeline.htm

SARS lasted from about 2002 to 2004. However, in 2002 the ability to quickly identify the genome of a virus was nowhere near as good as it is today.

In 2003 Hep C was pretty much a death sentence. I had a dear dear friend die of Hep C in 2003. Today, there is a cure. One pill every day for 90 days and the patient is cured of Hep C.

So, I think 1 or 2 months might be a bit optimistic.

Keep in mind that in the United States with a population of 300 million about 20,000 to 80,000 people die from the flu every year.

World Wide with a population of 6 billion, there have been about 14,000 deaths from Corona Virus.

Yes, it is serious and I'd rather not get it but, most people recover quickly from it. Also, it is possible that there will either be a vaccine, a cure or treatment using antivirals sooner that with past viruses.

If you need reassurance that it will all be alright, I turn your attention to the West Steps of the United States Capitol Building on January 20th, 1981. There stood Ronald Reagan who had been president for about 30 minutes and he said, "the most terrifying words in the English language are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help'". Okay, maybe that won't make you feel better but, I love that quote.

Made my day. Thanks. Don't do the bump with Roger. No telling.

Generally, Roger, my attitude to people like preachers, politicians and political news networks with the message to be afraid, very afraid is a solid Fuck You Asshole. I was just at a huge conference and there were a few people who refused hand shakes. I don't get how you can be in a huge hall with hundreds of people and worry about hand shakes. We had hand wipes at our display and it did not bother me at all that a small percentage used them. Still, I prefer to try to be as rested as possible and take vitamine B12. Others like C. There are other natural products you can use to up your resistance.

I had a very interesting conversation on the airport shuttle back with a very sharp guy from Seattle. The view from there was a little different from the view from my little backwater corner of the world. With their closer ties to Asia, Seattle is very worried. I had figured the death rate was maybe 1-3% and mostly old and people with compromised immunity systems. He said that the latest fatalities include people in good health and in their 20s to 50s. I can accept the thing might mutate and be a horror yet, but that puts us in the situation described above. What are you going to do about it? That is the intersting question.

The answer will vary from person to person. That would be an interesting question for a separate thread.

I live in the Seattle area and it is impossible to buy hand sanitizer. Just flew to Fort Worth Texas to visit family, and it's impossible to buy here as well. Bought Clorox Wipes instead. Personally I won't live in a cave til this passes by. But I'm also not out carousing every weekend either. Not my style. I'm 67 and in pretty good health. Fingers crossed.

we have dispenser of the alcohol based cleanser put in at work.

The medics say it can be passed on via contact with tear drops.

I found the hard way that getting this stuff in your eyes has F@@k all to recommend it.. when

a drop or two splashed into my right eye when I was putting the stuff on my hands.

Moral is, yes you can use it to disinfect your eyes but it smarts lots and lots. 😀D

That is what I call "non-habit forming". 😄
