it was a long time ago thats for sure.

I don't really like scary movies, so I don't watch them knowingly.

I remember watching "Halloween" (the original one from 1978 with Jamie Lee Curtis) and screaming at the TV in disgust at the sheer cluelessness of the characters as they wandered through the movie perfectly oblivious to the threat of a madman killing them.

My friends eventualy calmed my temper tantrum because (as they said) I was supposed to watch the movie and accept that teenage girls were that oblivious and shallow and teenage boys only worried about making out.

As much as I can look back on the movie and appreiciate the horror portions of it, logic and common sense spoiled the movie.

I thought it was absolutely one of the better quality low-budget independent movie I've ever seen when I first saw it as a young teen. I love her "stupidity" towards the end =p The first time I saw it I didn't scream at the TV, instead I held on to my chair and just laughed at the pure intensity of it, trying not to close my eyes.. just like I always do in rollercoasters as well! The same kind of thrill ride movie as Tarantino's Death Proof (the chase in the end;-)

I love a good scary movie but I haven't seen one in ages. When Alien first came out it kept me on the edge of my seat. The only thing scarier than meeting a Nelia Parasite from Alien in the dark might be seeing grandpa River in the morning before he puts his teeth in 😄

See it in a movie-house.

That shower scene screws with your brain. The frequency of edits/cuts hits some sort of internal clock and starts messing with you. It's quite a physical phenomenon, and one that really hits on the big screen with a darkened auditorium.

You have to go to the really excellent films of later years to find such suspense. There are examples in this thread. (For example, Alien is quite a suspense film, because after two initial scares, everything else is off-screen or just slightly after a cut to a new scene, and you are ready to jump over a bridge by the end of the film).

Alfred Hitchcock once said that it was better for the audience to imagine the horror than to actually see it on the screen. He said our imaginations were scarier than what could be put on the screen.

I think the movie that scared me the most was the 50's version of 1984. I had nightmares about the reprogramming scene for years. Rats ... brrr.

I stopped watching and reading the book when I realized what those rats where for.

Some things need not "thrill" me like that.

Yes transward, the 50's version of 1984 with Edmund O'Brien was excellent. I saw it many years ago.

I have no idea if it was excellent or not. I spent a good portion of the running time in the lobby. I just know it scared me more than any other movie I ever saw. Plus I was pretty young. I thought it was another of the old 50's science fiction movies I loved.
