Maybe its because of all the scouting with my kids, or maybe its a liberal left wing thing but I have always had oil lamps, candles, several flashlights, camp stoves, extra water, blankets, a general emergency kit if you will. I remember years ago when I was still married and we had 5 kids one a baby who is now in his late 20's, we had a travel trailer that was always kept packed ready to go, then again we always kept 6 months of food in the house, Mormons keep a years supply but we had just joined the church at that time so needed to work harder on that one, Mormons are also quite conservative, I guess when I hear of someone who lives on the top floor of an apt and does not have even a flash light, it makes me wonder if that person is as you call them one of those liberal types that is looking for someone else to provide for him.

I do have a flashlight. I said so. But anyone who didn't would not have been able to use the windowless halls or stairwells. It must take a lot of space to store six months+ worth of supplies - space which is not found in an apartment. You rich guys have all the luck.

Well, that is according to how fat you are and how cheaply you can eat. Storage of beans, flour, grain, canned goods and so forth does not take up that much room.

Another thing, it kind of dictates the kinds of foods that one normally eats because of the need to rotate foodstuffs to keep them within shelf life.

Doing this may amount to a diet, especially if one happens to be a rich, fat Republican who eats too much fast food...

Amazon sells "LED EMERGENCY LIGHTS" and there are several varieties. I have two different types and keep them charged up. They are worth the investment. Search them on Amazon and see what you would need. Some act like broad wide area lights and some act like spotlights.

I use the "crank" light for long times and he LED's for short power outages.

I also have a flashlight next to the toilet and before you even ask, YES! it has happened.

The last car I owned (not this new one) had a spell where the battery kept dying without warning. I still have the portable car "assist" battery and I can use it to charge or operate my cell phone. Handy in a long power outage but it was expensive to buy if you don't need it for a car.

I've never used a crank radio.

And two years ago when I was out of the house for five days thanks to the 24 inch snow, I came home with fresh food for 2 days, opened my refrigerator and freezer and dumped the contents without a second thought. I can't and won't take the chance that it stayed unspoiled. So unless you have canned goods and/or dry food that can't spoil, be careful.

BTW - Patterson and the Passaic River was all over the news (MSNBC) today and it looked a grand mess.

NEWPORT BEACH — Areas near the Balboa Pier flooded Wednesday due to a high tide and surf increase, according to lifeguards.

A 6-foot tide at 11:20 a.m. flooded streets and closed the parking lot northwest of the pier and on A Street, said lifeguard Capt. Boyd Mickley. . .

. . The flooded parking lots affected the cars parked there, according to Newport lifeguard James Jackson, who worked to keep beachgoers out of harm's way.

"Cars that were in the front row of the parking lot were picked up and moved to the back row," Jackson said. . ."

The surf is suppose to stay up through Friday. This includes the famous, wedge body surfing area.

Never. I never laugh at the meteorologically challenged. Come flood, wind, or E'quake.

I commiserate with you along with my Newport Beach, Balboa Pier neighbors so terribly inconvenienced.

We all have our own vision of Paradise. Mine is the mid Orange County coast, a mile inland on a bluff.

San Francisco is just too packed for me. Milwaukee was wonderful but the joints of my hands disagreed. Nashville is an intellectual vacuum. I don't get it when Vanderbilt University is mentioned in any "good" way. I like "space" for my gardening and a moderate least offensive climate.
