Re: There's Always The Weather
Seattle: Home of the 78-minute summer
http://www.komonews.com/weather/blogs/s ... 42443.html
The mission: Find out how many minutes it's been at 80 degrees or warmer this year-- what I would call a true warm summer day in Seattle.
The answer: 78 minutes.
Or, breaking it down: 12 minutes on July 2, and 66 minutes on July 6.
For those that say: "C'mon, you know 80's a pipe dream around here. I'd say 75 degrees is a more accurate 'summer representation,' " I'd first reply, "Wow, these past two summers have really warped our perceptions of a normal Seattle summer." Seattle (at Sea-Tac) does averaage 25 days a year at 80 or warmer.
But my second reply would be, "can do."
It turns out, we've had a whopping 18 hours and 48 minutes of temperatures above 75 this summer -- hey, it's more than 2/3rd of a day! Never mind that some cities like Dallas haven't been below 75, day or night, since June 23rd.
Weather does seem to be different here than the rest of the country.

Don't forget the famous words of Mark Twain, "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco"

NEW YORK (AP) A lengthy, blistering heat wave that is blanketing the eastern half of the United States is putting significant stress on the nation's power grid as homeowners and businesses crank up their air conditioners.
Utilities say they're ready for high power demand and widespread electricity shortages or outages are unlikely. Lines and equipment are not fully taxed and there is more generating and transmission capacity available than usual because of the weak economy. Also, not many major storms are in the forecast, meaning fewer downed power lines.
Yup, if America's economy was working as it did five years ago, there would be power outages. Just before the sinking, we had a rolling black out. And who can forget Enron and Grandma Millie. Now we have windmill generators turned off as there is no market for their production; which is fine by me as those pass built windmills are located in those passes used by migratory birds.
Again a nice, pleasant below A/C day with a breeze blowing through the house.
It is good to be on the left coast. Eh, fhunter?

Moi, there is the Right coast (the one in the East) and the Wrong coast, (the one in the West) which were you referring to???
But don't worry Moi, after the big one your beach front property will be near Portland and I understand the weather is nice there.

Re: There's Always The Weather
This is the first summer I've left my central air conditioner on for several weeks at a streach. Hit 34.4 C last week, hovering around 32 to 33 C this week, but with a very high humidex (yesterday, t was 31.5 C here, but with humidex the temp was 'rated' at 45 C).
I walked to work yesterday at 5:30 am and was covered in sweat by the time I got there, all I wanted was a NAP, but had to START my 12 hour shift. Ugggg.

Speaking of the weather
http://news.yahoo.com/prolonged-heat-wa ... 25653.html
CHICAGO (Reuters) - A heat wave baking the central and southern United States was blamed on Wednesday for at least 22 deaths this week as forecasters warned that the abnormally hot weather could last into August as it moves east.
The National Weather Service said 141 million people in more than two dozen states were under a heat advisory or warning because of the soaring temperatures, the most recent in a series of heat waves that have scorched the country's midsection off and on since late May.
In Wichita, Kansas, where temperatures have reached 100 degrees or more on 24 days so far this year, forecasters warned that the mercury would hit at least 100 degrees each day through next Tuesday.
AccuWeather.com predicted the effects of the current heat wave -- in terms of stress on the power grid, damage to roads and bridges, and lost lives -- could eclipse the effects of the deadly heat wave of the summer of 1995, which claimed hundreds of lives in Chicago alone.
The left coast is the cool ribbon of temperature in America.
Just ask fhunter, the left coast is better and the correct coast.

Re: There's Always The Weather
If you use a swamp cooler in the current heat advisory area, will it work well?
Will is cause condensation of moisture inside as the air is already full of it?

NO it will not work at all, other then to make it worse. If you don't have AC then a fan but never a swamp cooler.
