Does the doc remove them from an opening in the scrotum, or from the lower stomach / groin area ?

I would prefer to NOT have a scrotal removal.

Although due to his location and my circumstances, it seems unlikely that I would be able to use his service regardless of how he does it.

But, it would be good to know how he does it, should my situation change, I would jump at the chance to have it done by him.

When I talked to Dr Aarnkoff several months back he said it was through the scrotum. Usually one incision but he said sometimes he does it with

two, much like a vasectomy. I believe the procedure though the abdomin requires a hospital surgical suite and a day or two in the hospital.

I am scheduled for my surgery on Nov 10th.

I had it done inguinally and was back home from the hospital in a mater of several hours. It requires general anesthesia but I understand that with a radical orchiectomy the recovery is quicker, with less likelihood of problems post surgery. Also, the cord is completely removed so there is no possibility of it attaching itself to the scrotum, which could cause post-operative pain. If I had to do it again, it would still be through the abdomen. I have a very small scar that I don even notice anymore.

Radical orchiectomy would require major incisions in groin, and require either spinal or general anesthesia.

Anesthesia is a costly specialty and requires great care.

If you had an early am procedure with no complications you might be done as an outpatient.

Depends on your physical make up and doctor's skill and experience.

Surgeons who treat male prostate or testicle cancer are more likely to be the ones who have experience in surgical extraction of testicles.

If your balls are diagnosed as infarcted, that can lead to development of tumor. Fairly routine to have infarcted testicles surgically, radically removed.

The infarcted testes are sent to a lab where they are thinly sliced and examined for tumors.

Most of the time is spent in prepapration and suturing the skin back together.

Making the opening and removing the testicle and cord is a fairly quick procedure.

I have never heard of anyone getting them removed via inguinal canal in a non-hospital or non-out patient environment.

Done wrong, pain, bleeding, infection, shock, maybe even death, would be the most likely side effects of such a non-professional removal.

I spoke with Dr. Arnkoff about a month ago by phone, and consistent with what everyone else describes after a very short conversation he agreed to do it. I just sent an email through his web site asking to set a date for April 2013.

They are not fond of going out six months, I guess there's a pretty high "drop out" or "no show" rate?

Any way I did ask to set a date six months out so I could continue the chemical castration trial and save the money necessary for his fee and travel expenses. I contacted them again about two and a half months out since I wanted to get some sort of confirmation so I could start looking for airline tickets and I'd heard he was going to raise his fee. They gave me the date I wanted at that point but contacted me quite regularly to confirm the date afterward, asked me to call the Wednesday before the procedure (mine was scheduled for a Saturday since that was his preference), call again when I got into town the day before the procedure and he called me the morning of the procedure.

So for what it's worth, don't be too concerned if your request to schedule an appointment with a six month lead time is met with some reluctance on their part.

Let the healing begin. Swollen to the size of a grapefruit even with a drain tube in. This is going to be a long night. More stories to come.

Glad to hear so far so good, even if...

Resist the urge to suck out the swelling with a ShopVac.
