To clarify: I am a pilot and master, retired. All licenses are geographically specific except Master Ocean Unlimited and even that does not include pilot in any waters unless specifically authorized. I did use some of the same knowledge as Mark Twain would have used. Now it is all different, computerized and with GPS, the specific knowledge of a stretch of river is no longer needed except when seeking license to pilot a particular stretch of river. The upper river channel depth is controlled by locks and dams, the critical draft problems are on the lower river. --FLO--

I seem to remember back in the summer of 63 my parents and I took a trip around the USA, when we were in Maine they told us that the winter of 62/63 they got 35 feet of snow. That seems like a lot of snow if you ask me but there was this door to the outside of the guys house but it was on the third floor.

Seems to me this snow event was over blown by the media to a blizzard.
I remember Milwaukee one winter with snow shoveled into berms higher then 5' short people.
24", really. <sigh>
Do simple "snow events" still occur.

Moi the average snow fall in Milwaukee is by month Dec about 9" Jan 14" Feb 9" Mar 4" so what are you talking about? If we get one snow storm of over 12", that's a lot of snow, we had one here around 18" last month, that was unusual. 24" is a lot of f...n snow.
But at the end of the day, when I think about how cold its been and I think of what winter was like in southern California, and I think - would I want to move back? The answer is always the same, HELL NO.

We're sposed to get 6-12" over Sunday and Monday. Might snarl the rush hour traffic a bit on Monday AM. Surface streets will suck but the highway and snow routes will at least be clear. Just not looking forward to the incompetent idiots...

River DEAR

I am well aware Milwaukee is spared a lot of misery by being on the proper side of the Great Lake.
The other side gets hit real hard.
I am also aware Madison is more like St. Paul/Minneapolis then it is Milwaukee although some 60 miles west of Milwaukee.
Remember, I liked Milwaukee, the joints of my hands visibly didn't the second winter.
California cured those joints right up.

How's this blizzard treating you?
Keeping River off line tonite?

Although it could be ten degrees warmer, five would do.

Its about 25 deg warmer here a beautiful day snow falling, everything white and clean looking, I love the snow. the pair of birds that have decided to stay through the winter, are at the bird feeder which I keep for them, munching away. We have already gotten about 2 inches or more and its still falling, the trees in my front yard are covered with that light brushing of snow that people on the west coast pay for when having there trees flocked for Christmas.
What a wonderful day,
River
