Lava flows from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano
A thick stream of lava erupted from a volcano on Hawaii's Big Island on Thursday and had crept into the surrounding forest, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but it did not pose a threat to surrounding communities. (yet)
A magnitude 3.8 earthquake also occurred early on Thursday beneath the volcano's south flank, but "seismicity within the volcano remains at a low level," the federal agency said.

River is safe - he is house-sitting further inland.

How sure are you?
When did you last hear from . . . .
Remember Admiral Richard E. Byrd, who got his weather messages out regardless of adversity.

Pele never sleeps, however awake is a relative term. She is spewing however its near nothing, at the rate Pele flows even if it started heading again to the sea it will take several months to get there. This one is at about half the energy as the last time. So nothing to worry about at this time.
However there are two Cat 4 Hurricanes heading by us. The first should be going by tomorrow some time.

It's the picture of that lava flows. That always makes a great filler for the news.
Kilauea has been erupting for 18 years which is a world record.

Mauna Loa is rumbling again, it is the largest active volcano on the planet, the last time it erupted was in 1984. I don't need to worry about this volcano, it will not flow my direction, Kilauea on the other hand is just up the hill and she will do what she does. Right now she is flowing still but its extremely slow, so slow in fact that the locals like me have not thought about it in months.

Rain, wow has it been raining, yesterday it dropped a couple inches, 7 inches for the month so far and were only to the 21st. I know California would love to have the rain we got this weekend, the fires would be out.
Aloha

Some rain but not too much; last week's 2 inches undermined the roads in the Angeles National forest and crews have spent the week stabilizing them and limiting traffic. No walking the dog in the forests to hunt for deer.

We keep hoping that rain will come soon to California and the west coast, these fires are out of hand.

you can't hunt Bambi?

The helicopter flyovers of the Pu’u ‘O’o vent just got an amazing video of a minor lava outbreak near the crater opening.

The pilot even says that in 30 years of documenting lava flows, he has never seen a display like this.
It is marvelous to see.
(And River is very far from this display of nature.)

That was something for sure, the vent is about 15 miles from me and the way things flow I am not worried, to many different ways it can travil and when its all happening at the vent that's a good thing.
Just a bit of history to give you an idea what its like living on several active volcano's.
1. How many volcanoes are there on the Big Island? Which ones are extinct, dormant, or active?
Five volcanoes make up the island of Hawai`i: Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea.
Volcanoes that will never erupt again are considered extinct. Dormant volcanoes have not erupted in historic time (the last 200 years in Hawai`i) but probably will erupt again. Active volcanoes have erupted in historical time (the last 200 years in Hawai`i).
Kohala, the oldest volcano on this island, last erupted about 60,000 years ago and is considered extinct.
Mauna Kea last erupted 3,600 years ago and is dormant.
Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea are active.
Hualalai erupted seven times in the last 2,100 years. The only historic eruptions were in 1800 and 1801. Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984 and sent flows towards Hilo. Kilauea has been erupting since 1983. 32 years non stop.
Loihi, a submarine volcano, is 15 miles (24 km) southeast of the island and 3,178 feet (969 m) below sea level. Loihi will probably not reach sea level before 250,000 years or more. Seismicity, geothermal vents, and fresh lava indicate Loihi is active.
So when someone says the volcano is erupting, we stop and think to ourselves, its always erupting.
