If I recall correctly it was when the tsunami from the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake hit Asia. Several thousand Swedes were among the dead. Phelps had it in his head that they were all there for a pedophile prostitution ring. The guy is mentally ill and totally off his rocker.

In addition, the indiginous radical Muslim leaders of Indonesia claimed it (tsunami) happened because of Western decadence and (GASP!) women running around in bikinis...

Yup. In Sweden we have a law against hate speech that protects gay people. A pastor in a small baptist (I think) congregation in the south part of Sweden made a sermon condemning homosexuals a few years ago, and he was prosecuted. (No one would probably have even cared what he said unless he hadn't also mailed the entire sermon to some newspapers who printed it...)

He was convicted at first, appealled the sentence - was acquttied in the court of appeals. The DA appealled the acquittal, but the supreme court upheld it.

While this was not yet settled, Phelps got wind of it and started to make noices that made the first pastor look kindly and tolerant...

Anyway I've got the W B C leaflet on my noticeboard at work, so whenever I wonder it what I do make a difference I only need to look at it. (I work in politics in Sweden...)
