I'll register if you'll have me and think you can help. I am doing some research on ancient Persia for some fiction I am writing based on the biblical Book of Esther. There are eunuchs in the original story, so there will be eunuchs in mine. They are minor characters but I'd like to get them right, if possible.

The eunuchs are in charge of the haram and also serve as guards. I'm guessing that they were not voluntary and castrated and sent into service before puberty .

Some of the questions I have are what pronoun to use for them? I found a New York Times article from 1888 that uses "he."

I imagine they were tall, square jawed, and prone to balding like men, and had high pitched voices. Would they have sexual feelings?

I gather they couldn't have penetrating sex - that's why they were trusted around the harem. How would they have felt about themselves - as a third gender?

One source says they were obese and pale.

Although it doesn't say so in the Bible, other sources say that in the ancient east, they were sometimes trusted advisors to the king and there was even a eunuch shah.

Do these things sound true to you? I appreciate any answers or ideas or references you can offer.

Thanks,

Marcia

Marcia,

If you don't get a reply from the automated registration process, let me or Kristoff know.

I have read the book of Esther in the Apocrypha texts, and it does mention eunuchs. We also have another thread running on the subject at ABOUT the same time period, give or take a couple centuries.

I doubt the square jaw and proneness to balding, however. It was observed in the past that prepubertal eunuchs never went bald, giving rise to the belief that bald men were quite virile.

I'm sure Jesus can cite sources to the fact that most of the eunuchs that you mention were probably unwilling ones, and fully nullified at that.

I registered and now seem to have access to fewer forums than before. For example, I had to log off to find this forum. Am I doing something wrong?

The eunuchs are in the Hebrew version of the story. As I said, they are minor characters but they are mentioned by name.

You say there is a historical thread on the board? Where can I find it?

Thanks,

Marcia

Hi Marcia and welcome

Don't worry, as soon as the automated registration process has gone through, you will have all the forums available again. it should only take a day or so.

Once the automated process gets done after you have responded to your email, it then goes through me, and I pass on it. I usually do this 2-3 times a day. Sometimes, however, I don't get the chance to get on quite so often. Like today - too many time-robbing conflicts. Check your registration now - if there is still a problem, send me an email or message like this.

I've read in the archive board for some time, and sometimes I feel like joining a discussion.

When I want to register, I've trouble with understanding the terms of use. It seems that I have to promise not to discuss hot stuff.

Can anyone explain the real meaning of the declaration text?

The TOS is fairly simple and straight forward. If you don't agree with them, don't come here.

As far as "hot stuff" goes, what is your intent, meaning, desire, in terms of discussion?

If you've been coming here for a long time, then you have a very good idea of what goes on here. I then should think that answers to your question would be rather self-evident.
