Back when I was in middle school there were boys who would brag about getting drunk or stoned as if it was a badge of honor. As they saw it abusing drugs or booze was a sign of manhood. In actuality they were just little kids who'd have to ask their moms to buy them their favorite foods. They were complete dependents. Self destructive behavior was some how the mark of an adult.

I think that in the San Carlos "universe" many boys don't see it so much as selling their dicks. They consider becoming an "Island Boy" as a step towards emotional independence and a way of achieving complete financial independence. Although they are marginalized by being slaves they are also empowered by their ability to entice rich men and by their ability to control the men who fall under their spells. Castration is really only a side note to them. Its the means to an end and not the ends itself. The boys are looking for relevance, or power, or love, or adventure, or money.
