I am with you on this one, I have a camera a real nice one it takes pictures, I have a phone I talk on it, it has other things that it does but I am not interested, I don't answer messages for two reasons, I don't know how to get them nor do I care.

My phone is just that, its mine, not some other telemarketer who thinks the best time to call is when I am having dinner. He does not pay for my phone, I pay for it, who does he thing he is disturbing me during dinner? Friends are different, friends can call at any time, but if you don't know me, there is a reason and I don't wish for you to make your acquaintance with me on my phone.

The worst of all are robo calls, this is a computer that is calling to tell you some important message that you don't want to hear, could care less about other then it disturbed you. Last week the local school sent them out for an open house, I got three of them.

I have seriously thought about doing like a friend of mine did, NO phone, you want me, come visit. Its inconvenient for everybody wanting to get a hold of the guy but he leads a nice quite life, no TV either.

Damn, well I guess I will keep the phone, but just remember if I give you my number your special.

Lot's of cell phones have "white list mode", where you can specify - accept only calls from the list. At least older Ericssons and SonyEricssons did.

As for the camera in phone - it can be a good thing, when it is the only thing you have on hand, but you just can't make decent photos, with plastic small lens. No matter how many megapixels you have . And small phone camera sensors are extremely "noisy".

There are few kinds of magnetic/electric (they are dual after all) fields - high frequency fields: they work as a kind of microwave oven - heating tissues mostly. Don't look into the waveguide with the remaining eye .

Lower frequency - the power lines and so on - it is either mostly electric field, almost no magnetic field - like from power lines (google the image of luminescent lamps lighting up under high power transmission lines, and you will understand what happens under them, and why it is not good for you), or mostly magnetic field with low electric field - strong magnets, electric engines, power transformers and similar things.

Both can be dangerous, but, IMO, the strong magnetic fields are relatively safe (just don't carry your floppies, hard disks and credit cards through them). Ok, really strong magnetic fields, if they are localised, can disrupt your brain signalling temporarily. But for that to happen, you need really strong transients in the magnetic field.

It is a sore spot for me, cause on previous job, I complained about the noise from the new UPS. Got "you are hallucinating" response. After that I brought an spectrum analyser app on smartphone and showed that there really was noise, in 13kHz range, and worst of all - periodic, so that you could not "tune it out".

They start from 450MHz for CDMA and go up to 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for GSM (if I remember correctly).

Then there is WiFi, that strangely coincides with the frequency, that microwave ovens use at 2.4GHz and newer devices also use 5GHz, cause 2.4GHz is getting pretty overcrowded.

The power ranges start with 0.1W for Wi-Fi (or even lower) and up to 0.5W-1W for cell phones.

They share the same frequency (to an extent, there is a set of digital channels, each cell tower uses it's own subset from there), then, the frequency is divided by time multiplexing between the phones. That is for GSM, for CDMA it is a bit more complicated with more maths and using specific codes. Same goes for 3G).

As for encryption - yes, GSM phones are commonly encrypted (there are 3 settings there - no encryption, and two strengths of A5 encryption). Unfortunately, the encryption is not strong enough, and can be relatively easily broken.

The location functionality (without GPS) is rather crude. I have seen it at work and it can locate you up to base station. In a city, when you are located in the reception zone of few base stations, it gives you position with accuracy of few hundreds of meters. But move out of the city, and accuracy drops to the point of being useless. So what that someone knows that I am located somewhere in the circle with 10-15km radius?

I'd also add, that both SIM card and a phone have unique identifier. So, if you want to get a phone number totally unrelated to you - you need to get a new SIM, not in your name, new phone with new IMEI (or some phone with dark past ), and do not turn it on near your usual locations .
