I only remember hardware stuff like that vaguely from 1968/69 -- Big, hulking machines -- and A.J. Perlis (head of the department) said it would all disappear for a threaded language just like his -- ALGOL (and then ADA, and then PASCAL, and then C, then C-, then C++ ... Now it's all internet based.
