137 mph was the max speed of my Mustang with the Turbo T-bird 2.3L in it.
I have ridden up to 145 though.

Are you sure about it being a 2.3L, that is a 4 cylinder. What year is the Mustang?

I took my 1969 Dodge Charger to 110 before I chickened out. That is when I was 16. It had a lot more petal, but my courage was exceeded. That is the fastest I have personally driven. I did however go 140 in my brothers 1968 Olds 442. That 400 Olds engine was one heck of an engine. I was screaming at him to stop and let me out. I was crying, I was certain I was going to die, but I was only 11 years old. He slowed down once he realized I was freaking out. He laughed about it, but never told anyone I cried.

I got my Seagull Seahawk hang glider up to 38.12 mph once. For an hour at Clinch Mt., TN. I was finally able to land when the wind slowed to 38.09 mph.
Whew! That was a close one. Does it count?

The Falcon came out in 1960 with only a 6 cylinder engine. I don't remember when it got the first V-8 but it would not have been a mustang 302 in 1962. The Mustang didn't come out until 1964 with a 6 cylinder and a 260 and 289 V-8. The 302 V-8 was was about 1966.
I'm not too sure about the date; but you're correct on the c.i.d. of the engine..It was a 260...I loved those early Futuras. They changed the styling shortly thereafter to a more squared off look..Loved them too...I'm not sure if they ever got around to installing the 289 in them, and I'm not sure of the last date they made them..The fact is, a '64 Mustang was, essentially, just a Falcon underneath a fancy body...But it sure did sell!

I remember my Father owning a Chrysler with that monster engine 410 or 425 or 450 cid engines with dual carbs, etc.... This was when I was 10 or 12 and before I understood cars and speed. Stock, right out of the showroom it beat police cars both in acceleration and top speed.
My father's policeman friends used to come and "borrow" him to catch the home-grown hot rods and blown out engines.
One story I clearly remember is that My Father and policeman chased down a really bad-assed kid in his own souped-up car. Like I Said, this was a stock Chrysler and when it got alongside the kid and had more power under the hood, my Dad said the kid just crumbled and stopped. He never raced the police again. It nearly destroyed his ego to think there was a more powerful engine in a stock car.
My family moved from the east side of town to the west side of town not long after. My father had the original Dodge Chargers and I drove them when I hit 16 and got a license. I used to watch "Dukes of Hazzard" and wasn't impressed with the General Lee because I drove that car (not red and not with the Stars and Bars on it - not north of the Mason Dixon Line, silly boys) and I knew what they did on TV was not possible with the stock version of that car.
And then because I went to college with my brother and both of us couldn't afford a separate car, we shared a VW Beetle. Not a car known for speed but still, to drive 8 miles from home to college through the city at rush hour, the little car was so much easier. I drove that VW to NYC and commuted back and forth from Manhattan to Elizabeth NJ for a summer of work. I wasn't fast but it was fun and practical. although, if you have bad kidneys invest in the premium shocks.

The Falcon had a 260 cubic inch V8. The early Comets had the same engine.

When you are hanging out in the open air 38.12 MPH counts! --FLO--

I only drove for a few weeks in 1979 when I took driving lessons. I cranked my mom's '74 Chevy up to 30 mph. I can still remember the thrill.
I rode as a passenger in some crazy cars. There was a very steep hill near where I lived as a teen. It would get icy every winter. My friends would deliberately jam on the brakes and skid their cars down the hill. There was also a nearby highway that was flat, straight, and seldom used (somebody made out on that tax money). My friends called it "floating" when they drove over 100 mph there and put their hands behind their heads. Oh to be a teen boy!

When I first got antilock brakes, I used to deliberately lock them on empty roads simply to learn how to handle the car when they were active. My driveway is 300 feet long and in the winter, I could slide backwards with the antilock brakes chattering unable to stop. That tended to start my heart thumping.
