Re: Things I believe but can't prove and other things that bother me.

I have been watching these shows about the doomsday preparers. It's amazing, everyone has a different scenario of what doomsday is likely and they have equally different solutions for the doomsday they envision. I used to just think people like this were insane. But as I got older I started having a new compassion for these people. I realized that these people must live a horrible existence to have to be preoccupied by fear of the end of the world as we know it.
Many of these people have dedicated their entire lives and the lives of their children to preparing for doomsday. They have decided not to wait for the actual disaster, but to start living that way now, while everything is still plentiful. Myself, I am going to enjoy the excesses while they are available and eat like a doomsday survivor, when I am actually a doomsday survivor.
There are so many ridiculously contrived scenarios and each one plans is if that is what is going to happen and only that. All of them are extremely short sided in that supplies are limited to days, months or even years. When one of these events happen, it is never going back to normal again. It will be a new world and with it will come new rules. I promise you that the people with small arms will not be the ones making the rules. To me this must be the worst fear of all.
I have always felt really bad for people who can not feel safe without a gun. I witnessed this firsthand with my own brother. He was always afraid of what someone else might want to do to him. What a terrible way to have to live. Always seeing the worst in everyone. Always seeing everyone as a potential threat. It made me think about how terrible it must be to have to live as if everyone were going to try to kill you and take your stuff. All that worry and all that negative energy.
I know that those people don't feel all that stress because they want to. I don't believe people like living in fear. But it's clear it's a genuine fear that others, many times the government, are out to get them or will be out to get them at this future apocalyptic event. So much fear that people are doing all this crazy stuff that we see in these shows, because they are terrified of some future event that may or may not happen. They get so invested in preparing that they have to continue to justify the apparent sacrifices made for nothing, by continuing to believe it's just around the corner.
And if they get too old and die before their disaster comes, they get the kids to continue to worship the catastrophe gods and continue the preparing for ever. It's all based on a false belief that we can somehow prepare for unprecedented events. I prefer to believe I will continue to be smart enough to survive in a post apocalyptic society the same way I do now, by adapting the will of the power in control of whether or not I get to live or not. Sudden climate change is not new to species here on earth. A change in our social system will cause a change in the climate to which we find ourselves. Adapt to survive and die if one fails to adapt to the new reality, whatever that happens to be.
And of course this is all not to mention that the whole thing starts with a premise that one is somehow going to survive the apocalyptic event. So from my point of view these people are just living a life of fear for no reason. If things are going to really be bad? A few months or even years of supplies are not going to solve the long term problems, assuming of course that one has the ability to keep possession of ones things. Which is not at all guaranteed, considering the guns the military has vs say your average assault rifle.
If I have to turn into a wild animal to survive, I will. But I see no reason to do it one day sooner than necessary.
