Nope, but don't worry, it's not your complete ip.

Thanks for the answer,

yes I realize that it is not the full IP address, unfortunatly it is enough to identify the organization. Now with small organizations approx. 15 coworkers, identification may just be too easy.

OK OK I am probably being paranoid but I would feel better if less was available.

Thanks

Linda

Well with the IRC standards and such, I'm not sure if it really would be possible to disable.

As for being paranoid, I can see where you are coming from, although really not much you need to worry about with someone on here finding out about you.

If you are concerned about your co-worked finding out than actually hiding the IP address will not help. Since the company can easily check work computer for traces of history, etc. There are a number of companies that log all incoming and outgoing traffic and would be able to tell which sites you are visiting, and could possibly view everything that you send or download.

My suggestions if you are worried about work finding out about your interests do NOT browse sites that you don't want them knowing about from your work PC.

For those of you that think software like evidence eliminator or, clearing History will hide your tracks you are wrong. It just clears the information off of local machine, but it is possible for firewalls, routers, etc. to log all sorts of stuff.

OK IÂ’ll stop making all of you paranoid, but I did want to inform you that workplaces have the right to monitor network usage, and to think twice about what you might be viewing at work.

Well I know my company does monitoring, as I'm in the IT department and have dealt with the logs from those devices.

I know our department has had to deal with a handful of people for going to inappropriate sites.

I know that our system scans everything, but is set to only log stuff like porn, games, gambling, hate, etc related material. And when it does catch stuff I can get the time/date, user and what site they were viewing, and can also read their e-mail if it falls in one of the category that was set up.

There are a number of other things that can be monitored with those types of devices.

If you want to browse sites like eunuch.org from work and are technically savvy, get a UNIX shell account somewhere from an ISP that *doesn't* monitor your activity. Then SSH into that UNIX shell account and use a text web browser to access eunuch.org. (This is assuming your company firewall allows SSH traffic through. Most firewalls that I have seen do.)

For graphical web browser access, you'd have to setup an HTTP proxy on the UNIX shell account server that you setup your browser to connect to through an SSH tunnel. (Make sure to clear your web browser's cache/history/etc. to erase the evidence from your local computer if you do this.)

Implementation of this is left as an exercise to the reader.

If you tunnel traffic through SSH in this manner, it shouldn't be possible for them to see what you're doing. They will know that you're doing *something* though by looking at the amount of traffic generated from your machine, but they won't be able to tell what since the traffic will be encrypted when it passes through their routers.

Sounds rather complicated and risky.

Yes is very risky and fairly complicated to do. And if employer was really concerned software could be loaded on workstation, or camera could be installed in office if they suspected any wrong doing.

I have my ways of tracking what people do at work. (heheh) Never assume that you can cover tracks at work, or even at home when viewing illegal content.

What "illegal content" are you talking aboout? What is illegal on the internet that is not illegal otherwise?

I am confused. 🙇 🙇 🙇

Sorry for the confusion. Illegal content that was crossing my mind was "kiddie porn", copyrighted material, and other things that would be illegal if it wasn't on the internet.

I know most people think that they are safe from prosecution if they view things over the internet. I was just mentioning the above information as an FYI so people are not surprised that the Police are busting their doors down because they subscribed to a "Kiddie Porn" site, or were sending off threats about terrorism acts that they wanted to commit. With the Sept. 11th terrorist acts, many new laws have been passed that grant the government easier access to monitor the Internet for suspicious and illegal activities.
