If the poor kid got it shot off before he got to use it on a girl has to be the cruelist of cruel. Not to mention the harrassment he will endure at the hands of both male and female classmates.

I've often thought the greatest hunting thrill would be to reverse the usual order of things: fence in an area of many square miles of wilderness; stock it with fierce animals who might prey on human beings; people could enter the area unarmed and compete to see how well they brought down any animals, aided only by their skills and wits and any weapons they could construct. Now that would be real hunting! I expect some people would volunteer, but that many of today's "hunters" would be reluctant to even the odds. It would take big "balls."

Believe it.

One of my friends has over 300 firearms of varying sizes, and his 8 year old can strip, clean and rebuild a lot of them blindfolded, just like Major Payne in the movie. Walk into his room at night, and you won't walk back out.

Right now, he's trying to find parts to fix up an old Howitzer.

I swear that family could take on the Russian alone and probably hold them off for a month!

Needless to say, I make an appointment to come and visit.

On a more serious note, if the US, for some reason, is ever invaded, the invaders are going to have a rough time with this part of the country if they send in group troops.

It's not that uncommon here. I started hunting at 12.

As for all those against gun control, you are living in a fantasy world. The US has the highest per cap murder rate in the industrial world the majority of which is caused by guns. Owning a hunting rifle and unlimited gun control are 2 very different thing. And why the hell does anybody need to walk around with a concealed weapon.

There is a difference between hunting game and carrying a concealed weapon. Indiana is the land where the hicks have gun racks in the back window of their pickup trucks. Nobody in their right mind conceals a gun there. They are no good for intimidation purposes if you hide them.

Getting a hunting license in Indiana requires firearm safety classes. I am not sure if you have to know how to read to take them, though.

Notice that the original article said that the incident occurred at the home of a law enforcement officer.

I once knew of a case in Indiana where a despondent man shot himself twice in the head and then died after he pulled a cover up over his face.

You see, these hicks are of pioneer stock and are very, very tough. One would have to be tough to survive that much alcohol and METH...

" Local residents sometimes refer to Terre Haute as the "meth capital of the world" because of the disproportionate number of methamphetamine arrests in the town and surrounding area." (http://www.simplyhired.com/a/local-jobs ... +Haute,+IN)

Welcome to Indiana, set your clock back 60 years to comply with "DECADE SAVINGS TIME".

So how is the 14 yo boy?

Any news?

Restricting gun access is not the answer. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ is not Europe or Japan. (I often wonder how Yoli survives in Euroland without her pet guns nearby.)

Suggestions:

1) Felony crime with mandatory incarceration/loss of freedom for using a gun in the commission of a crime or injuring someone unless safe handling can be proven, Cheney might get off. If injury is really bad like blinding or spinal cord injury I would life them.

Two stories stand out in my mind. A little girl whose face, eyes, sinuses getting blown away and receiving a facial prosthesis modeled as her and her sister. The other, a local one. Father's weekend with ?four? year old daughter. What better weekend to clean the shotgun. Ooopp, blew off one of her arms and a kidney like a shark bite!

The 'sorry, me bad, won't own guns again' is not enough.

Choose to handle a gun, KNOW it is serious and libelous.

2) Licensing, registration, displaying in public, etc. be left to the individual States.

3) Guns with no hunting or sporting purpose, be forbidden except possibly to licensed persons with interests such as historians, maybe. There is no freedom I can imagine to own a machine gun meant for one purpose. Kill people. I doubt the Founding Fathers meant citizens to own private cannons, powder and ball in their day.

Moi

My 2 cents in three points.

I'm prepared to get my head bitten off here but why do you need guys anyway? For what purposes does anyone need a handgun? Could rifles for hunting not just be licenced like they are here?

I know guns will never be banned but its just a thought, afterall I have never shot a gun before and probably never will unless they bring back national service!

Have you heard the saying, "You had to be there," implying that if you weren't, you wouldn't understand? The same thing applies here. If you weren't born here, you probably would never understand our fascination with guns.

I grew up on cowboy movies, playing war, cowboys and Indians, and such. Guns are part of our culture. It hasn't been that long since one's skill with a gun could determine whether or not one survived in some places. I've lived in a log cabin in Alaska and opened my door to come face to face with a black bear. I had a bull moose that decided he didn't like me and came after me, and I wished I had something bigger than the .22 pistol I had with me, at the time. Luckily, after I backpedaled a ways, he decided I wasn't a threat and went on his way. I had a young grizzly bear that decided he wanted to check me out, and I was a quarter mile from my truck. People are killed every year in Alaska by grizzly bears. I didn't have a gun with me. Again, I was lucky. I made it to my truck.

If I'm out in the wilds in Alaska, I want a .44 Magnum with me, at least.

I live in a city, now, and don't need either of the two guns I have, a .22 rifle and a 9mm pistol, but I like them. Guns are just a part of who we are.

I like guns and have had several, but I've always considered having a gun to be an adult thing. Yes it is America, but it is weird that kids that we don't even trust to drive we happily let go hunting on their own. On YouTube you can see even toddlers shooting guns.

I think it still be be in line with American rights to limit kids to shooting in shooting ranges and let them hunt starting at 18.

There are just so many ways that a young kid can make mistakes. Even with gun handling training, can you really trust all kids? Most of them can't even pass their math tests despite being in school all day! They simply have no idea of the horror of killing or maiming someone. And their emotions can be intense, and they're experimenting with drugs and alcohol -- it is pretty hard to sleep at night as a father if you've just had a big fight with your teenage son who has his own guns.

I can fully understand having them in rural parts but its by people having them in cities that cause the gun crime problem.

Maybe America should look to Switzerland which has a higher rate of gun ownership per person but yet has so little gun crime problem that statistics are bearly kept... I actually believe it is mandatory to own a gun in Switzerland if fit and able.
