It comes with Windows 7 and I bought Office. The young woman felt it would be all I need when I begin to photoshop my digital photo's. Hey now that I will be able to

photoshop images I may be ready for the personals.

Of course still looking for advice on antivirus software.

I realize that I'm late in posting this message but I don't frequent the message board often. I work for a major computer manufacturer providing technical support to customers.

I assure you that while the free version of AVG is light on resources, it's also light on security. I see on a daily basis all the virus', trojans & malware that get past it. I will never use it nor recommend it.

I now use MS Security Essentials on my computers. I tested it by intentionally blasting it with various forms of obtrusive files & programs. I'm pleased to say that every one of them was detected. It's also not the resource hog that MS OneCare was.

I also suggest not having multiple (types of) security programs because more often than not there's some sort of conflict in the background. A good security suite should be able to protect your computer as a stand-alone program.

I've never been one to jump on the MS pro or anti bandwagon. I prefer to test their products & others to form my own reviews. That's my security opinion & worth what was paid for it.

For me its the best Norton Internet Security Suite, and they just came out with 2010 edition. If you hunt around you will find it on sale for a good price.

Norton 2009 is a great security suite & I'm certain that the 2010 version will be just as good.

It's not an evolution of its 2008 & prior predecessors, but a totally new platform. It uses less resources & an excellent feature is that it detects files that have been accessed since the last scan & only scans said files. This allows for a leaner & quicker scan, thus not making the computer lag during the process.

I would never use Norton 360 though. While the features are nice, it's one of the largest resource hogs on the market.

I recommended MS Security Essentials over Norton for one important reason: it's free. As i write this, the Norton & McAfee marketing departments are working feverishly trying to justify paying for their respective software when a just as capable program is available without cost from MS.

There are many different opinions on antivirus software, but one thing is certain. Any protection is better than none at all.

When you set up your computer get some help creating a system restore disc so that you may return it to a virgin state should the worst happen. Be shure to make back-up coppies of important files.

I hope your new computer brings you even more pleasure than your posts have brought to all EA members.

🤘🙏🙏🙏

P.S. Thank you for the reputation points. They are always welcome. The EA may be the only place where I have a good reputation.

I think that you mean system recovery discs. On an HP, this can be done by going to Start > All programs > PC Help & Tools > Recovery Disc Creation.

Use blank DVD-R discs. Make sure that they're not DVD-RW (rewritable) because it won't burn them. Also, don't buy Memorex brand discs because for the most part they're non-compatible with HP's.

I agree, always back up your data. I don't feel sorry for anyone, in this day & age, that has a system crash & loses all the pictures of their child's first birthday or deceased relative. I hear the stories all the time. 🧱

While unpacking the new computer and going through the old computers discs and instructions I found the receipt. It was purchased in August of 1999. Ten years of trouble free service.

You have never herd of the Miller Law have you?

Millers law says that technology will double its self every 18 months. Tugon, you were light years behind us, once you get into your new toy and learn the ins and outs go back to the old one for a look see and think of what you missed over the years.

Oh but River the old one allowed me to find the EA, meet you and other great people. Yes technology may have passed me by but my life is so much richer from the friends I have made.

RiverThe is another law - that efficiency of software halves in the same 18 months. So the is no increase in speed.
