My vasectomy was done long before the various "no-scalpel" techniques became popular - fairly large incision, lots of stitches. I clearly recall the doctor explaining that he removed a short section of the vas - and sent that section to a lab for verification that it was the vas and not anything else. I do not know if they go to those lengths today.
