Funny you should bring this up, yes the new flow is if it continues headed for the road that we use to get to town, if it by chance crosses that road, we have another way to get out, its the coast road 30miles and hour or slower and fifteen miles to the nearest main road, although several other are on the way but they two are one and two lane roads.

The joys of living three miles beyond roads end. Moi would go nuts but we have that pioneer spirit. That can do attitude, we live on the edge its our way of life.

I can't think of living anyplace else, I love it here.

Climate Change Will Ruin Hawaii

Amongst the doom and gloom, the study projects:

Higher average temperatures, stressing native animals and plants and causing an uptick in heat-related illnesses in people (think dengue fever or cholera), as well as a higher concentration of invasive species;

A decrease in trade winds, which would disrupt the rainfall patterns across each of the islands and create periods of drought and heavy rain and flooding;

Warmer oceans and higher ocean acidity, which could trigger massive coral bleaching, marine migration, and affect the ocean’s circulation and the way it distributes nutrients.

There is a good animation of Hawai'i sinking into the sea although it is really the sea level rising.

It's all relative, y'see.

It's not the warming but,

the following glaciation we should fear.

How will turning off the Oceanic Thermal Conveyors effect Our River ?

In support of Man Made Glaciation, I am making some ice cubes.

We'll all be dead of heat stroke before the glaciation occurs.

Next year I plan to eat all the GMO food I can find and die of terminal flatulence.

The storm of 2014 is gone, its now September 3rd and on my trek today I went through three road blocks, they are still cutting down trees and clearing right-a-ways. It looks like a war zone entire forests decimated, Power company cutting down any tree within 50 ft of the road or their power lines, in one area the power lines have been removed, about 3 miles worth. It will be a long time before things have that untouched look again, and now there is that volcano that we live on/by/next to/down the street from, and its on the move again. This time its going the other way from its last big flow to the ocean.

People are demanding that the government do something. What I have no idea, I have never known any government anywhere that can instruct a volcano on which way or how it erupts.

Raymar asked me in a pvt message a while back what makes Hawaii different from other places I have lived.

Pele governs the island, if she does not like you she will force you out, if you are still here on the big island after a year and things are going ok then Pele approves of you.

There is a heart beat on this island, its alive like no place I have ever lived. There are the drums that are played every night somewhere on this end of the island, you can hear them in the evening. Its the heart beat of Pele make no mistake. The people that make it here leave the main land behind and accept that on this island, Pele sets the rules. When you accept those rules you survive, when you embrace them you flourish. She is flowing again and she will in the future, it is the way of things. Or as the locals say, it is what it is.

You need only listen to the drums.

The lava flow on River's Island is a mile from homes.

Why don't they use water and earthworks to direct the flow before it is an emergency ?

Moi, over the years, several countries have tried several things to divert or cool lava flows, the truth of the matter is that Lava is so hot it will melt anything in its way that includes concrete.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lava

Here on the big Island, this newest flow goes underground for a while then pops up again, then flows on top and goes into another fisher, then underground again.

Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world and those of us who live in the Puna know that we live on a volcano, as the locals say, it will do what it will do and life goes on.

In the news today the Civil Defense League was out marking the location of propane tanks in two subdivisions, just in case they need to be moved before the lava runs down the street, which brings up another point, if the lava flow goes across the highway we will only have one way to get into our place and that is the coast road, one lane and slow.

Hawaii the last frontier.

Remember Santorini

or more recently, Krakatoa !

Sometime, volcanoes just blow up. :)

I thought Iceland had a means to persuade flows elsewhere using fire hoses?

Getting too tropical here, I don't think will come visit there.

Any good 🚬 yet ?

Moi, Krakatoa was different type of volcano, there are different types of those.

Shouldn't you actually be worried about Yellowstone? That one can explode.

Can't say anything about diverting/controlling lava flow.

Except that you would need a lot of water. Just calculate - say few meters think of basalt, at no less than 1000°C at the core (actually - higher). So, back of the envelope calculation, one cubic meter of basalt, heated at 1100°C (so it would be liquid). If my back of the envelope calculations are right - you need 7 cubic meters of water to cool one cubic meter of lava to 100°C. And after you cool it, there flows more and more. Do you prefer making a lava lake with borders that then burst? ;-)

not to say anything about what happens when you put cold water on lava, it explodes first then.............
