WHY DO I HATE WEATHERMEN?

panic, panic,

Run to the supermarket and buy out all the toilet paper and potatoes chips and frozen pizza.

That's what they do here in my town, with just a 'hint' of inclimate weather. Rush to get milk, water, bread - an 'stuff' to entertain or feed the kids . . . Most of which takes ELECTRICITY. Then the power fails, and or the weather warms up a day later.

A little sleet or icy rain is enough to shut down the Gov't offices (everyone else stays open though).

Atlanta schools and Gov't offices are the only ones that stay open in severe weather . . .

I do believe it is that water heavy slushy and ice stuff?

The Autumn remains nice and soft except for a few days of Santa Ana winds.

Moisture sits off the coast and the rain storms make it further and further south.

There is the smell of salt air more frequently than I remember lately.

BTW Will my Asparagus die back for the Winter or are they gonna stay lush and green all year?

Your asparagus will go limp for the winter. Shrivel up and shrink.

As for the storm, NO.

Banana's should be ready to harvest in about three weeks, Pineapple plants are doing well one is ready to harvest in a couple weeks, the sweet potatoes are ready this next week and the squash just got planted but already sending runners all over with blooms everywhere. The Avocado trees are in bloom as are the orange and lemons.

it was a cooler today, only got up to about 78 or so, it does cool off a bit at night, but I still keep the window open and use a sheet or light blanket if it gets really cold like down to 65 or some such.

Today I trimmed palms and weeded, we also cleaned the water tank which is always a job. Tomorrow I will finish the pruning of the palms, I have not counted them but I am going to guess we have at least 70 or 80 around the yard. The bamboo never gets trimmed but the damn cane grass is a bitch to remove, did some of that today too, more tomorrow.

Its rainy season here and this past weekend we had a thunder shower not unlike ones we had in the mid west, power went out and everything. Pahoa gets about 100 inches of rain a year, we get about half of that as were at sea level next to the ocean so we get average around 50 inches of rain a year. Its a warm rain you could and some people do shower in the rain.

Its been cold and rainy here, I don't think it got up to 75 today and rained most of it, the water tank is full which is a good thing.

As for the rest of the country, I understand Buffalo got 5 feet of snow, with more on the way. So how is the weather in your part of the country?

It isn't like the Buffalo and Erie areas don't get this type of snow. They have for years.

I remember a trip when I was a teen to visit my Father's friends in Rochester New York.

On the drive back, from Buffalo past Erie and down to Butler PA was constant snowstorm - not much laying but my Dad had a bad time driving. Slick, bad visibility, snow and ice. On this trip, Erie suffered the worst. IT disappeared halfway south between Erie and Butler PA.

Gone like magic.

That trip was one of the reasons I didn't go to Rochester Institute for my chemical engineering degree. Too much snow.

The reason for this current cold snap is the melting of the Arctic Ice cap and the way the winds twist around the North Pole. The Jet Stream flows different over water than over ice.

Warm, dry weather with the firm prediction of "rain" late Sunday thru Tuesday.

Day by day I add a few Holiday Lights. I have 6 strands of solar powered and I am working on my house lights along the roof over hang.

If my handyman shows up, I plan a Festivas pole.

Its finally happened, WINTER has arrived, today it never got above 72, my roommate had to put on long pants. Of course we still opened all the doors and windows to let the fresh air blow through the house. A funny thing happened, we were outside and it started to sprinkle, I looked up and there was not a cloud to be seen, now how strange is that. I still keep my window open all night and if it really gets cold I pull the thin blanket over me, normally its just the sheet.

The days are getting shorter too, only 11 hours of sunlight this time of year, unlike the 13 hours we get in the summer.

One of the things I like about the island, never to hot, never to cold, NO SNOW, days and nights about the same, its wonderful to live in paradise.

However no Yule Lights, they really look stupid on a palm tree and we have about 100 around our yard, like all around our yard, all kinds of palms, many different kinds.

Our house here does not have insulation or heat of any kind, if it gets warm open the windows and doors, cold close them. To date the only time I closed all the windows and doors was for the Hurricane we had last July, it did no damage where we were. It rained all night, good for the catchment system tank is full and that's a good thing. Today its beautiful out, clear sky's, you can hear the waves hitting the island, the ocean is blue and so clear you can see into it.

All week I have been pulling out dead or cutting out dying palm leaves, some are small others in the 30' range, as soon as it dries out a bit were running them through the wood chipper for mulch then back into the garden.

Dress code for the day, (this is every day) shorts, sandals and t-shirt and maybe a floppy hat when working outside don't want sunburn as we do have 4 seasons like everywhere else, in the winter its about 10 deg cooler then summer which seems to be year round.

Note: If I lived further up the mountain it does get colder and people do heat there houses and have fire places, the only two climate zones we don't have here on the big island is the Arctic and death valley, so there is something for everybody. In the winter some people go skiing, yes we have that too.
