It was 1967 Clark Air Base Philippines when we had as I remember a Cat 4 typhoon hit us, we were dead center so after 2 1/2 days of sitting on our bunk the floors were covered in 3 to 4 inches of water, the storm passed. Well not really we were now in the eye of the storm, very quiet outside. We picked up the coconuts that had fallen resupplied the beer, got more K rations, then 2 1/2 days later the back side of the storm passed over. All total the storm lasted 6 1/2 days, it took another week to clean up the mess.
I was in Okinawa when one hit, it was just a side glancing blow. My roommate and I had been stocking up on K rations for months, the liquor locker was full, we had several new decks of cards and baby powder to dry them after each hand. It only lasted 3 days, a good thing to as we were out of booze and K rations, however my roommate and I were able to restock with money to spare.
That was then, this is now, two storms are heading my way. The first will be here Thursday, the second Saturday or Sunday. The first one is heading right at me, the second a bit north.
Yesterday I went around the yard and brought in everything that was not bolted down, I secured the storage chests outside with locks and bungee cords. I have stocked in food and WATER plus extra 5 gal jugs for flushing.
Tonight its calm, first time in several days that the wind has not blown. The sky's are clear and its beautiful.
I just got back from the store, water was sold out at both Longs and the local Market. The gal at Longs said, they got a shipment yesterday it was gone by noon, another shipment today gone by 10am. These crazy people are stocking up on what is important, WATER, SPAM, (I will never understand why they love Spam), and of course the most important thing there is, BEER. Please note I also bought water, last Sunday, I have pop and beer and milk and all sorts of canned goods. We as in everybody filled up their cars with gas. The line reminded me of the gas lines of the 1970's.
I am ready.
I will try to post a couple times a day as Wi-fi permits or electricity is available.
We have a UPS system for the frig and water pump but if were out of power for several days that will not help. One thing for sure, if I lose power my tablet will get plugged into the UPS system, I have several unread books waiting for me to settle in with.
I will keep you all informed via this thread.

Be careful after both hurricanes pass because the drinking water might be bad.
Think of seawater blowing up as mist and getting mixed with the rain.

"HurriCano" is coming to Hawai'i.
The News claimed Hawai'i hasn't witnessed this kind of storm action for decades.
River just moved to Hawai'i no doubt irritating the Spirits of Nature that joyously Wintered on him.
Connect the dots.
It's River's fault.
This winds and pressure variances may dislodge the volcano's plug allowing a flood of lava like a shaken, warm bottle of champagne brutally uncorked.

The water here is a catchment system, it comes off the roof into to the drain pipes before it gets to the tank there is a run off so leaves dirt salt etc gets dumped before it goes into the big 10,000 gal tank, when the water is pumped out its filtered three times, 20 micron, 10 micron and 5 micron filters, then through the ultra violet then into the house to the kitchen sink where it goes through yet another filter 1 micron, if we fill the pitcher its filtered one more time.
I guess I could pull the pipe out but I don't think it will make any difference to the overall quality of the water we drink.
People that use there catchment tanks for drinking are very serious as to how and when its filtered.

Following that logic the critical drought in California is caused by MOI over watering his plants, if only he cut back California would not have a water shortage,
Connect the dots, Moi's over watering - California is out of water.

I used to drink well water. For anyone who doesn't know about well water - it's hard and turns white clothing grey unless one uses the right detergents and additives in the laundry. . . Lots of limestone dissolved in it in my area. HOWEVER, the well was slow and if I had guests, they could run the "reservoir" dry.
So I got a 6000 gallon tank. That's a tank about 8 feet in diameter and sixteen feet long. Think of a big pickup truck with a cap on the back and that's about the size of it.
I don't catch rainwater. Which in my case would be to run the roof gutters into the tank.
I only use treated city water. A 6000 to 10,000 gallon water truck pulls up, throws out a hose and fills it. Takes about 20 minutes.
If I did catch rainwater then I would need all the filters and purifiers Riverwind describes.
I suspect there's also a Septic System in Hawaii rather than a city sewer. Not sure of that, though.
If there is, then that's another world of "things you don't do to your toilets" and "things you don't do with dirty dishes."
Also, think about the garbage we all generate and how it's landfilled on an island. Gives recycling a whole new meaning.
These are the small prices of living in paradise with a beach nearby, perpetually warm weather, sunny skies, no snow or ice, and plentiful cheap fish.
Spam too. (Never understood that one. Potted Meat! Where are the farms they raise and kill all those little Spam creatures? I've heard bad things about the spam slaughterhouses.)

You are correct about septic system, you do watch what you flush. As for recycle here on the Big Island they do not have trash pickup, you must take it to the transfer station yourself, we seperate paper, tin cans, glass, plastic, recyclable cans, bottles, etc things with a deposit, green waist goes in yet another bin. There is even one for garbage. At the house we have a compost machine that our garbage goes into, we turn out a couple cubic feet of good compost about every 6 weeks, if the weather turns sunny it should be once a month. Here in Hawaii we recycle everything, its a way of life. A lot of people live totally off the grid, IE solar electric backed up by generator, most water heaters are on demand, it is a different way to live, most people have a garden, we do and were growing pineapples, Avocado trees, and now sweet potatoes. Things grow here without much trouble, weeds included.
As for the weather, the wind is picking up and its been raining all morning, so far a light rain, its quiet outside, no birds they have gone to the place where they can get under shelter. Even the Geckos are in hiding. The dog and cat know something is about to happen, the cat has gone into hiding, the dog is barking at every sound she is not a happy puppy.
Earlier this morning I closed all the windows around the house, the only two that are still open is the bedroom window to my room and the front door which is a dutch door, I will be closing them later today.
Its 11:41 am Thursday, take a look at goggle earth and watch the storm, we are in a direct path its coming right over head.
I will keep giving updates when I can.
