There are proper geology terms to apply here. Stuff on the ocean plates is carted along by plate tectonics and scrapped off and piled up or ACCRETED as the oceanic plate is forced under a continental margin. Some of the accreted material is dragged along or TRANSCRETED as the oceanic plate dives under the continent. At some point the aluminous continental materials melt under increasing temperature and pressure to form molten magmas which rise and are EXCRETED as volcanic eruptions.

I prefer to believe volcanoes are the effect of magma circulation and need not be on the
borders of "plates".
Hawai'i is over a magma bubble that has moved from north to the south by the big island today.
I wonder
Can River toast or does he just evaporate ?

As for the volcano's of the Hawaiian chain, there is a hot spot at the bottom of the ocean that keeps spewing lava, the pacific plate keeps moving counter clockwise, so the result is that over time the islands move off the hot spot and a new volcano starts.
There are several volcano's in the islands, 5 are on the island of Hawai'i called the big island. 2 are dead and 1 might as well be but the other two are very active, the mountain erupted in 1983 and the one that's just up the road from me has been erupting sense 1980 or there about. It is called the safest volcano in the world as the lava just flows out .
Use the web there are several sights that talk about the difference between the volcano's the ones that became islands, and the sea mounts that fell short and the one off the shore right in front of me that is still growing. That new island should break water in about 10,000 years or 50,000 thousand years or maybe never.

If you were eating right,
you wouldn't be sick.

Because I eat right I was only sick for 2 days, most people that have caught this bug have been sick for a week.
Moi, if you never get sick you never interact with people and sometimes the ash from the volcano when the wind is just right will make you sick as well and that has nothing to do with eating, of course you can stop breathing to avoid that but not for long.

Where's River ?
http://news.yahoo.com/hawaii-residents- ... 13773.html
" Hawaii residents furiously stocked up on essentials as two hurricanes churned toward the islands, prompting flash flood warnings, closing schools and disrupting travel plans across the islands. "
River ?
Oh River is there on the big island, the really, truly big one to send EA-Nation updates on
Hurricane Julio and Hurricane Iselle.

I got an email from River about an hour ago. He had already moved everything he could inside and strapped the rest down. He had stocked up with everything he needs for a few days off the grid, in case the power goes out. He expects to be off line as his Internet shuts down for the duration. He knows what to do. I wouldn't worry too much about him.

When I was in Florida a number of years ago - Clearwater FL to be specific - a freak thunderstorm rose from the Gulf of Mexico and came ashore real fast. It had straight winds over 50 mph and one burst up to 75 mph.
Now the Hotel had huge porticos and all the taxis parked under the canopies, we all ran inside the hotel.
The LifeGuards had to get people off the beach in such a hurray no one had the chance to throw the pool furniture (tables and chairs) into the swimming pool. . . Nothing blows out of the swimming pool but it can blow away if it is outside the swimming pool.
Electric went off.
I watched those small tin drink tables that are about 18 inches around on three tubular legs flying around the parking lot. One decapitated a car by flying through the rear windshield and out the front. Think water damage . I knew the owner of the car. He laughed at it like the rest of us.. (we were watching from inside the first floor of the hotel)
There were separating panels on the balconies supported by four big screws and some flew away like wings of (I hate to laugh) inspired evil. Think of steel doors flying through the air and landing. They dent asphalt and break concrete and crunch cars. Not nice.
That's the reason the taxis hid under the porticos.
Lounge chairs (the tubular, vinyl strip kind) didn't fly but they did bend and dent everything else.
I was in a ground floor room and I paid my bills (don't ask why) and looked over at the sliding doors and water was being blown under 6 inches high. When the storm ended, the hotel staff came and moved me to a dry room.
There was a roundish TIKI BAR on the beach with wooden shutters to lock it when the bartender had to pee and no relief man or woman was around. About 6 people and the bartender got stuck inside -- they were wet but not hurt.
It lasted about 20 minutes and did lots of damage.
Rather impressively awful.
A hurricane lasts hours maybe days and has sustained high winds.
If the wind finds a weakness, then it exploits it and causes damage
Water is the next thing. If water gets through the walls like it did under the door of my hotel room, then everything gets wet, nasty, moldy. Need I say more? I learned that on Mythbusters.. they have a few programs on wind and water damage.
SO now when you are pounding nails and accidentally hit your finger with the hammer, do you appreciate the jerk that asks "did that hurt?"
Two hurricanes are going to wreck havoc all over Hawaii and that I can say without a doubt.
"Be Prepared" is more than a boy scout motto.
"Stay safe" is the word of the day.
