Re: what are your hobbies
Hey, it is time to revive this thread!
Of all the things I have read here, this is my favorite or at least in the top ten. When I read through this thread, I am always amazed at how much we all know here at E.A. Just check out some of the hobbies here, and you see, we are a pretty smart bunch. When I asked for advice on my Black Locust trees, AMAZINGLY someone here DID KNOW, and quite a bit. In most other groups I doubt anyone would have even heard of that tree.

DeaconBlues (imported) wrote: Tue Apr 08, 2008 1:08 pm I MIGHT be taking up a new hobby and I would like to ask any EA members with REAL experience for any helpful advice...
My son's cousin was quite successful last year with his 4H project raising a pig (made $900 profit). Naturally my son is now interested. Of course I am delighted to see my son growing, and hopefully learning responsibility and self-reliance through a 4H project.
So now, my new 4H'r son need to buy a pig. I got him on the phone to a few of the numbers in Arizona that the County Agriculural Extension Office gave us.... WOW! What an unpleasant shock, the only one selling pigs said they would sell us a "blue butt" pig weighing 40 to 60 pounds for $275-300. OMG!! That is FIVE DOLLARS A POUND FOR WEIGHT ON THE HOOF!! You can buy pork tenderloin for less than that!
Are there any EA members with "valuable bits of insight" or "priceless pearls" to offer me on how to raise ONE OR TWO pigs, I am not gonna be an industrial pig farmer here, just looking for a 4H project.
UPDATE! UPDATE! (very late) UPDATE!
I DID get my son in 4H, we did buy a "show pig" (56 pounds, cost $175!) and we raised her, "finished" her (that is to say, we fed her until she was up to weight), and finally, this September we sold her at auction. She weighed 220 pounds, and sold for $5.50 A POUND AT AUCTION! By the way, the average "market" rate for live pigs "on the hoof" is about 50 CENTS a pound. We had to pay the auctioneer a 6% fee, but even after all the expenses, we deposited more than $1,000 in my son's savings account, all for about four months' worth of light chores of feeding and caring for a pig every day.
I STRONGLY encourage any of you who have children ages 8 to 18 to look into the 4H programs available to you kids. My own son's 4H experience was actually pretty good.
The best part for us.... was when the state university's "Meat Science Department" evaluated the slaughtered animals, and Awarded my son's pig the "Top Carcass" award. They said that even though she was not the biggest or heaviest pig, the quality of the meat was clearly the best out of thirty some odd pigs they slaughtered from our county. I guess making my son take the pig on long walks every day paid off because she had the best "muscling" qualities, and the right ratio of fat to muscle (all of the other pigs were actually too lean).
Earlier, I was the one asking for "priceless pearls" of wisdom and knowlege about raising 4H pigs, now I offer help or advice to anyone considering raising a pig for a 4H project or just to have better quality pork for your freezer.
