Good news - Arlington National Cemetary said they would accept my mother free of charge because my father was a combat veteran of WWII.

Bad news - I told the funeral home which is holding mom's body

what I found out and they said they would ship her after "fees" were paid. They want $1,460 to ship her over PLUS cost of a casket.

Somehow it doesn't look like mom will be interred anytime soon

Perhaps there is a local military cemetery?

Not sure, but as I recall my grandmom was provided a casket, as was Grandad, by the Army. Do they still do that?

Riverside National Cemetary is our only military one. They were the kindest of all offering a free plot.

Requiring the purchase of a coffin before they'll let the body go? I'm not so sure that's legal... Would you be able to get that lawyer that was so nice to you to give them a call?

Good News - I found that mom had a savings account with enough to bury her I called Savings and loan who said I had to go in person and bring a death certificate and then I would have access to the money

I am quite relieved that things are working out.

One small fly in the ointment popped up today. The death certificate, it now appears, will take 3-4 days to be ready. When it's ready, funeral director will drive me to bank to get his/my money.

One good thing, mom's passbooks have me listed as sole beneficiuary.

Dear Mac

Try contacting the Department of Veteran's Affairs. They may be able to help because your father was a veteran. Also check with your local VFW and American Legion. I sometimes here the local news and radio stations tell of where to send donations to help families in need such as yours. Contact a local radio or TV station. They might help with an announcement. Your Mom's funeral is just as good a cause as any I have heard of.

God Bless you and my prayers are with you. If the funeral home will set up a fund for expenses, post the address here. I may be able to pitch in a few dollars and I am sure some of our EA family will try to help too.

Mom died 12 days ago and I'm still waiting for the death certificate so I can take it to the bank, get out the money to bury her and cover my utilities and medications. I'm down to two Paxils so today I start rationing them by taking half a dose per day.

Hopefully things will be resolved this week.

You should be able to get the death certificate from the hospital or your court house, registrar of deeds or what ever government body handles that type of paper with in a few days at most.

The funeral director may be waiting on things going through the mail. That could take a lot longer time.
