threads like this get you thinking back over the yrs,

used to do alot, many yrs ago, competitive shooting,2wheel 1/4mile shorttrack and 1/2mile ovals then motocross, harescrambles,

but for the past 20yrs it seems all I have done is eat, sleep, work, 7days a week, end on end, which changes what you do in your little bit of free time,

now its mainly

gardening,

the grandkids,

the dogs,

the chickens,

put wood away for winter(is that considered a hobby?😄,

sitting in the docs office

and surfing the net:D

I have a new hobby.

It is called "drooling" while staring at Jenny's avatar.

Yes, it can affect the eyes. I stopped when I needed glasses. ;)

My hoppies/interests:

-Puttering about in my Man-Cave making things (medieval furniture, caskets, rifle cases, etc.)

-I love movies (Key Largo, Maltese Falcon, The Cuckoo, Harold & Maude, Casa Blanca, Better than Chocolate, etc., etc., etc.)

-Books/reading - other bibliophiles will understand the satisfaction of reading, the texture of the pages, the smell of the paper, drinking in the words.

-I had started making knives and edge weapons and hope to build a more permanent forge in the near future to pursue it.

I MIGHT be taking up a new hobby and I would like to ask any EA members with REAL experience for any helpful advice...

My son's cousin was quite successful last year with his 4H project raising a pig (made $900 profit). Naturally my son is now interested. Of course I am delighted to see my son growing, and hopefully learning responsibility and self-reliance through a 4H project.

So now, my new 4H'r son need to buy a pig. I got him on the phone to a few of the numbers in Arizona that the County Agriculural Extension Office gave us.... WOW! What an unpleasant shock, the only one selling pigs said they would sell us a "blue butt" pig weighing 40 to 60 pounds for $275-300. OMG!! That is FIVE DOLLARS A POUND FOR WEIGHT ON THE HOOF!! You can buy pork tenderloin for less than that!

Are there any EA members with "valuable bits of insight" or "priceless pearls" to offer me on how to raise ONE OR TWO pigs, I am not gonna be an industrial pig farmer here, just looking for a 4H project.

Look for a livestock auction. I'm not sure what the availability would be in arizona though. I live in TX and trip over them...

I understand the price shock. My wife and I have been looking for a new dog that is a little smaller than our 80 lb german shepherd. We did a lot of research and decided upon a french bulldog. Then we found out that they run about $2,000! I think we are going to look for one at a rescue or for $2k a pup, maybe we need a pair and start selling pups!
