With regard to cognitive and memory decline, I wonder if OTC dietary supplementation would prevent or slow thhe loss of memory and other cognitive problems brought on by chemical or surgical castration without testosterone replacement therapy?

I have read about specific brain enhancing nutrients (non-drug) backed by clinical trials, but wonder if the lack of testosterone would produce similar positive results?

I posted at #4 above in Jan 2008 when newly finished with radiation primary (curative) treatment. It didn't quite cure me permanently, based on sharp PSA rise in 2015 and 2016 to over 23, but extensive imaging and two biopsies failed to locate any presumed recurrence lesions, hence no second try at a targeted cure was possible. Systemic Testosterone Deprivation came next, 8 months ago, by my choice of orchiectomy (a medicare-covered two-fer by my local urologist in an OR) at age 73, when cognitive ability is about all I have left as quality of life. I was well above normal in Testosterone till the surgery, and at the sweet spot in Estrogen.

PSA is now 1.2 and trending downward. Libido immediately plummeted to nil -- a blessing because I couldn't perform anyway; now I don't care and neither does my GF.

Gradually developing effects which are still worsening: Hot & cold variations are merely low excursions from normal, not peaks and valleys. Fatigue and very low leg strength. unsteady on my feet; plod instead of stride when out for walks. Short-term memory lapses quadruple pre-castration in severity -- very annoying, but I have much less intellectual cognitive loss; conversation quality is still fine. I do have a chronic fuzzy-minded feeling most of each day and my prime-time for best mental sharpness is fewer hours in any day -- about 2/3 of previous.

Back to your Topic: Since well before being castrated I have been taking two of Life Extension Fdn's OTC preparations claimed to enhance cognition: Cognitex and Dopa-Mind -- each at the recommended dosage or the higher optional dose. I don't have any way to tell how much help I'm getting from these products without quitting for a few months, which I don't want to risk. I can only state they have not prevented at least some loss of mental sharpness. I take lots of LEF's other products too, based on their literature and my own leap of faith that it's helpful.

From EA posts and even some Med Journal articles I have the understanding that restoring at least normal male levels of Estrogen with exogenous supplementation will mitigate cognitive quality loss that testosterone deprivation causes (and will mitigate bone loss and hot flashes too.) In men, their estrogen is converted from their testosterone supply via a natural enzymatic process, hence going T-free means going E-free too. To date I have not succeeded with interesting any of my MDs in prescribing me any estrogen to replace what I used to have. All they advise is to get lots of exercise. That starts next week after I get my taxes done.

Interesting personal experience. I can surely agree you would not want to stop your otc supplementation just to test whether they in fact are having positive results. I too take several otc supplements with faith that they indeed are doing that which they claim to achieve with long-term continuous consumption, and I am familiar with the Life Extension line of supplements, along with Dr. Al Sears supplents Primal Force.

I am still trying to discover my lowest daily use of TRT (androgel) to avoid hot flashes and night sweats, for which I am not aware of an otc dietary supplement to achieve such avoidance. I am still searching for such a human clinical trial backed dietary supplement.

Other than some lack of energy, more pronounced since castration, I have not experienced other common effects of castration, and I contribute that to faith that the otc dietary supplements I take are effective in doing that which they claim to achieve. The supplements I take have university and other double-blind clinical trials to state their claims of human results.

I had a complications to a testicular biopsy, was Hospitalised for blood loss and heart failure more or less woke up in the ER. Now am on 3mg of compounded androgel, cognitive problems still persist. Have been tested and cleared for auto immune and thyroid. I'm a machanic and do some engineering. Problem Solving and Anilitical Thinking are now difficult. For me brain fog seems linked to inflammation of the nervous system.

Bromalin (pineapple extract) is a 1500mg twice a day cuts the swelling in half if not better.

Coconut oil for myelin sheath repair (not sure on the results.)

Lions Mane for nerve repair (not sure on the results)

Have not had my cortisol checked but stress and negativity is exhausting. Usually shut that down imediatly, my office and shop is my zen place.
