Use of ice is generally meant to supress swelling and hematoma developing right after surgery. It is good to keep ice on the area for several hours and move around as little as possible. For pain it is best to use some pain killer.
If you choose not to use painkillers, your body will adjust after some time to pain. At least that is my experience after circumcision. I didn't take any painkillers after. When anesthetics worn off the pain grew guite to my limit I could bear. But after an hour or two it started to subsidise. By the end of day there was no pain at all. Only itchy feeling.
With castration the pain is different of course. But the logic should be valid. the question is, if you could endure this amount of pain for longer period.
