Somehow, I fail to understand why people are so dead set against this proposed legislation.

If you can't preach Christianity without preaching hate, you're in the wrong business. It's that simple.

And quite honestly, I would not be the least bit upset to see Falwell et al tossed in jail for hate crimes. For the lives they've ruined, for the pain they've caused, it's no less than they deserve.
