Dave and Losethem, think of the savings to the State in substituting oats for caviar.

What has me still puzzled, though, is that I'd always thought Henry VIII, who split the C of E away from Rome, did so in order to marry Anne Boleyn while Catherine of Aragon was still alive. Why would that have been OK for Henry, but not for Edward or Charles?

What was OK in the 16th century ceased to stay OK following the Victorian era. The monarch's now supposed to be a 'model.' The monarch remains 'Defender of the Faith', and the faith still does not permit divorce - not in Canada either. And BTW, the faith still does not permit same-sex marriage, except here in the Diocese of New Westminster, and its bishop has the entirety of the Church in a quandry because, in addition to now being allowed as a civil procedure in BC and 6 other provinces, same-sex marriage is also allowed as a religious procedure in the Diocese of New Westminster (most of BC).

Straying further from the topic, Bill C-28 (Civil Marriage Act) comes up for 2nd reading next month. While I think the odds are in favour of its passage in the current minority government situation, a scandal that's come to light in the last couple of weeks could well cause the fall of the Liberal government before 3rd and final reading. Back to square one?

And on topic, many think there should be another civil act to deny the title of 'queen' to Camilla should Charles ascend to the throne. Time will tell.....
