I was troubled by kidney stones in the 70's. I remember one particularly excruciating one. Then I remembered something which I had read in a geochemistry course in graduate school. Though the oceanic waters are saturated to over-saturated in calcium ion, inorganic precipitation of calcium carbonate does NOT occur because the presence of magnesium ion in the water prevents the nucleation of crystals of calcium compounds.
Ah HAH ! Might this not also apply to the formation of crystals of calcium urate, etc in urine ?
I promptly started taking a magnesium supplement containing 500 mg. of magnesium per day. I have never had a kidney stone since. "Post hoc, ergo propter hoc" ? (after this , therefore because of this) I don't know. All I know is that it worked for me.
A Bit OT, but...

The problem with magnesium, though, is that it absorbs other meds like oral allergy meds and antibiotics. So, no more magnesium for a while.
So far, so good.
