Saw the urologist yesterday (March 30). He said that I have BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) and am retaining urine at a dangerous level. He put me on Flomax and wants to see me again in 3 weeks. The instruction sheet with the medication indicates that it takes about a week before realizing any significant improvement.

Surgery may ultimately be a possibility but he wouldn't comment on it or the various procedures at this time. However, it would only be prostate surgery and not castration.

Castration (or nullification) should be elective at any age beginning with puberty and mandatory by age 40 or 50.

Mac, I am sorry I did not miss you but then again I havent been on line myself. I do understand what your going through and must add that sense castration the rest just dosent seem to matter weather I have a dick or not. I do agree in part with one thing you said, Castration should be elective after age 45.

I know how the infection works, as I have had it myself. No fun, hurry and get better and back on the boards. and remember a Dr will always be there for you if you look in the right place.

What your doctor is telling you is true. Seldom are prostate problems treated with surgery these days.

Hang in there. It WILL get better.

(April 2) The flomax is starting to work. I am going longer between urinating, and it is becomming easier with greater velocity and volume. Still a long way to go.

However, like a girl , when I really have to go it is becomming difficult to hold back. I have dribbled a few drops in my panties a couple times and have been afraid that I could pee them. Now I am beginning to see how it feels for a girl when she really has to go and can't hold it. I wonder if this will become a problem for me.

I think that I will ultimately opt for prostate surgery if my urologist is willing to do it. It would also be nice if I could get him to castrate me in order to prevent any additional problems.

Or better yet - all off!

What is Flomax? Is it an anti-biotic?

Can it cure the "inflammation" that originally sent you to the

doctor after taking the cold medicine? Or is it just to

shrink the hyperplasia?

Incidentally, Mac, did you or your doctor contact the manufacturer of the cold medicine, about your health problems after you took it? It's possible that what happened to you, is a side effect which the drug company is aware of, and for which there is some known remedy other than the usual ones.

it is not an anti-biotic. It serves to relax the mussle of the prostate and the mussle of the bladder neck. I don't know if it serves to shrink the prostate.

The doctor said that antihistamines and decongestants have that effect on the prostate. Thus, the makers of those medications are probably aware of it.

Again, I know what your going through, its no fun. Mac, have you or are you taking any drugs that will lower your testosterone, like Androcur. You might want to try it for a while and see if in lowering your testosterone levels is what you really want. I know it was for me and we are about the same age, ask your doctor and maybe give it a try.

RWNo just Flomax. I found on the web that it is an "alpha blocker". Will that lower testosterone?
