Jarte is fairly good, but another good word processor which is cheap or free is Atlantis, which I use all the time. I think the website is rssol.com. The free version doesn't have a spell checker, but it has extras like kerning and an "easy hand" mode which allows you to get a good view of text pqges. You can actually get away with using the full-featured version indefinitely, because it only has a time delay with a scold box.

Another acceptable word processor which is free, is Abiword, which didn't have a lot of features at the time I downloaded it. Don't recall the website. Rough Draft is also nice because it always shows two text fields.

Like Yankee Masha, I was an editor at one time, and I can tell you that the spelling and grammatical errors made by otherwise educated people, are absolutely unbelievable.

Thanks, YM, for the nice words. Thanks too for the correction on "taught"! I knew that... but it slipped through despite all care!

Yesterday I re-read some of my older stories. I blushed. My English teacher at school would have used up her red pencil! Many mistakes...

Anyway, I will keep writing mistakes. Today I started chapter 3 of The Choirboy! Hoorray! I spent 6 hours on it. Three or four more such sessions, and it should be done. Including mistakes!

I share these comments. Not because I am a good writer, but because I have to work so hard at it.

I just bought a new laptop and it has Windows-XP with Microsoft Works and it spell checks as you write and grammar checks too. I will eventually buy Microsoft Office (which I have at my office) and let it grammer and spell check. As much as I despise Microsoft, those spelling and grammar checkers are worth the money.

Too many times when I go to read a story online I see

1) "one paragraph" - A large lump of text that wraps for many screens. My tired old eyes just can't read that anymore.

2) spelling mistakes galore (what more can I say about spelling that hasn't already been said)

3) A lack of a re-read or editting. Sometimes I let me stories sit for a week before I go back and read what I wrote and edit it to make it better. Sometimes I read what I wrote out loud just to "hear" it. I never post anything from the first writing. Sometimes I edit five or six times. Other times I rewrite everything. It's my anal retentive nature.

I don't want anyone to think that I am calling myself perfect. Far from it. When I go back to my old stories and read them, I always see mistakes.

This is exactly why a lot of submissions are going right into the trash lately.

When I open up a new file, and I see ONE big paragraph, it's gone. If I can't read it in a relatively smooth manner, out it goes. The same applies to spelling errors - there's bound to be a few, but when so much of it is messed up that it's hard to understand, it's not going to be posted.🙋

I'm sorry that it has to be this way, but we just don't have the time to sit here and edit every single story that comes in. You should see some of the stuff that gets tossed out every day.

And if you think that's a "hard ass" policy, try submitting something like that to one of the other story hosting sites out there. I sent ONE story in to Nifty, and the posting guidelines for formatting, file type, etc., (to me) were a bit over the top. Of course, they probably don't have all the whistles and bells that B installed for here, either.

So if you want to submit a story, and you don't have a program that can check spelling, then write me in advance and I'll find the time to go over it for you, then send it back. Make an appointment, because if I DON'T know that your attachment is coming, I won't open it.

Sorry to be a pain, but "grammer" should be spelled grammar- perhaps your spellcheck has failed you this time? Oh surely not!
